@Gamecubed I feel like if I would have played TP on the gamecube instead of Wii, I would have liked it more from the beginning.. but I didn't and ultimately, the bad controls coupled with the boring first half of the game made it grueling. I mean, I kind of want to replay it again on Gamecube.. but just knowing how boring it was makes me dread the thought. It doesn't help when I really don't care about the characters either, aside from Midna. I'll give it a few years and try it again, heh.

A lot of people complain about the "Overworld (the sky)" in SS saying it's bad and feels pointless. A lot of people praise Wind wakers overworld for being great. They're basically the same thing. You float from Island to Island doing side quests here and there. Yes, Wind Wakers is obviously better, but not by much. At least Skyward Sword has the ground "overworlds" if that's what you'd call them, I liked those.

I think Twilight Princess, released in 2004/5 on the Gamecube would have got 10/10 from most publications. There were a few bits that were done better in OoT, MM and WW (side quests, minigames, characters) but other than that it was an almost perfect action adventure. The graphics are up there with RE4 and better than anything else I played from that gen. The Hyrule was beautiful and massive. If they had put more filler between locations and padded out the game with sidequests it would be the perfect game for me. I liked the Wii controls but there were a couple of bizarre controls for the wolf that made the early sections annoying. Not perfect but beats SS for me.

I loved the Skyward controls (for 99% of the game) but the linear story, recycled areas and almost empty (sky) overworld stop it from being my favourite of the Wii ones. It was also a wasted opportunity in terms of not having enough challenge or variety of enemy. The dungeon-esque land sections were good but Zelda games have always been about exploring to me and SS pretty much did away with exploration. There was not a single point in SS where I felt like I was exploring because the land sections were kind of scripted and the sky islands were too few. I didn't enjoy Wind Waker or Majora's Mask as much as OoT but going back to them now makes me appreciate them much more because of the exploration and charming side quests.

If Anouma is listening I want this for Zelda U:
Motion plus if possible, if not I would settle for remakes of LttP, MM and OoT with motion plus.
A huge Hyrule with other countries/continents either in the sky or out to sea
Sailing, flying and real ground exploration. Not just one of them.
Start outside a dungeon with a sword or at the very least a stick.
I want the side quests and the living world to be suck me in like MM, WW and OoT
Fun Minigames, not balancing pumpkins
Voice acting for everyone except Link. Either TT games or the Nintendo Treehouse people should do it. Failing that, the cast of Game of Thrones would be ok.

I've been playing The Legend of Zelda franchise since it was first released on NES. With that said, Twilight Princess is one of my least favorite LoZ games. Conversely, Skyward Sword easily makes it into my Top 3 most favorite LoZ titles! Hope that helps you out.

@Spuratis most people say that. I played it first on Gamecube and then I got the Wii version about a year ago... I never completed the Wii version. I didn't like it on Wii. It's a good gamecube game, but it isn't a good Wii game.

I remember how hyped I was for Twilight Princess as well.....

Twilight Princess is a more darker, adult and epic game, Skyward Sword is good but in my opinion Twilight Princess is best.

What I really did like about both games is the fantastic music.

True but being a Zelda game (that isn't Phantom Hourglass), that's less praise-worthy and more completely expected.

Though Skyward Sword is one of those games where the most used music (the 3 main areas and especially Skyloft) was overused to the point that I don't like those songs as much as I should. A shame.

I'm not a huge fan of neither. But I'd go with Twilight Princess just because of Midna.

Goodness, this is really split down the middle, isn't it?

Throwing my chips on Skyward Sword, but isn't that out of print now anyway? Twilight Princess got a reprint under Nintendo Selects and you can find it new for about $20. Skyward Sword runs about $60 new, but you can find near-mint copies for about $40.

Apologies if I'm incorrectly assuming that you're on a budget, but if not, why not just get both? Both are excellent games.

I like Skyward Sword more. The combat, controls, and puzzles were better, IMO.

This. Personally I think Zelda plays so much better with a controller. So I would say TP just on that principle. You can't go wrong though, they are both great games.

I don't disagree but the game felt too long. I won't go into the Fi thing because everyone already has but i honestly would have enjoyed that game more if they took out the worst/most redundant 5-8 hours of the game.

Fi was a soulless being, and I accepted that pretty early on into the game.

Also, I thought Skyward Sword was pretty short in comparison to my first time through TP. TP was kind of designed to last players along time, and I think that ultimately left too much gaps of inactivity in the overworld. In otherwords, it didn't really work with it's advantages of being the biggest Zelda game, IMO.

EDIT: Wind Waker and the DS games were pretty big, too, but I tend to think of land/country as what Zelda is known for.

I'm currently playing through the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess (upscaled via my backwards compatible Wii and component cables) and all I can say is...

Wow.

This game is actually good. Really good.

I think I was traumatized by the Wii version way back in 2007 when I first finished the game because I really did not care for it. At the time it was a huge disappointment to be honest. When I first played the Wii version something felt off about the game, but I could never put my finger on what it was. Now I see that the mirrored world (ugh), waggle controls (double ugh), and lack of free aim analog camera were such a hidden nuisance that I never got to appreciate the game. The mirrored world really craps all over the design of the original game, from the dungeon layouts to the overworld map. Everything looks off. The game also looks better to me in non-widescreen (probably because it was designed for the GC to begin with). Nintendo really botched the Wii version of this game and I can't believe I've been sleeping on the GC version for years.

A week ago I would have suggested Skyward Sword over TP in a heartbeat, but I'm going to have to finish the Gamecube version to give a more accurate opinion. If you are choosing between the Wii version of TP and Skyward Sword, without question play Skyward Sword out of the two. Skyward Sword is a much more polished Wii game and the motion plus sword controls actually feel intuitive instead of mindless waggle bs. It's also designed from the ground up as a Wii game so the geometry of the dungeons and map look and feel great. That being said, if you can get your hands on a Gamecube copy of TP, give it a shot. I'm rediscovering this game and so far it is really good. Feels like a whole new game to be honest.

If they ever do a HD remake of this game, I'll only consider picking it up if it's based on the original GC version.

To those that had Twilight Princess (Wii version) leave a bad taste in their mouth, I say give the Gamecube version a try. The funniest thing is that I actually bought a Wii to play the inferior Wii version because critics said that the Wii version was the definitive version. As a hardcore Zelda fan, this couldn't be further from the truth.
