Heh,depends. You looking to get one on the cheap? (Twilight princess) or probably get wiimotion plus and get the best zelda experience at least on the wii (Skyward Sword.)
Skyward Sword. Best Zelda (of the ones I've played, meaning all but the handheld ones and windwaker) ever. Keep in mind that Skyward Sword requires motion plus.
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
Skyward Sword. I played Twilight Princess after playing SS and it took me half the game to finally start enjoying it. TP does have my favorite zelda game ending though. Skyward Sword is just a really good game. Controls take some getting used too but they're much better than Wii TP. I'm a huge fan of darker games, too, Majora's Mask being my favorite console Zelda. TP just for some reason was hard for me to get into, it felt bland after playing SS.
TP. i have the gamecube version of the game, and it is FAR superior to the wii version. it feels great to run around in the massive Hyrule field. SS... has no field, and most of the islands feel like filler. the islands have no point in being there.

Blue blue.
Twilight Princess is cheaper and is my personal favorite. Skyward Sword is more expensive and is my least favorite 3D Zelda game, and it requires the added cost of the Wii Mote Plus (which may or may not be a problem for you).
They're both worth playing, mind you, but I'd just get whichever one you can find for less money. They're both long, so you won't be left wanting for more until you have more money.
Best thread ever

Yeah, Twilight Princess should be a safer bet. But if you have Motion Plus and love sword fighting on the Sport Resort (if you've played it), you would definitely enjoy SS. It's a game like you've never played before. I, for one, will find it very hard to turn back to button mashing for the next Zelda game if they choose to make it that way.
If you need me I'll be in the chamber of understanding.
I'm voting Twilight Princess. Skyward Sword may be more colorful and shows off the controls more, but I just found Twilight Princess to be better in every way, even with the crappy waggle sword controls in the Wii Version. I felt that Twilight Princess had a better use of atmosphere, and I liked its dungeons, items, and overall game mechanics way more. Maybe its just preference, but Skyward Sword was...pretty much everything I thought I wanted Zelda to be, only to realize once I got it that what I wanted worked horribly in excecution. The Sword mechanics made combat slower and more tedious, having dungeon-like design in the overworld made exploring anything a freakin' chore, and the RPG-like mechanics (expendable, upgradeable items) just forced grinding and retreading where it wasn't necessary. And whoever thought the shield be both breakable and a huge part of the early game should die in a fire. There's no reason I should have to backtrack out of a dungeon every time I lose my fully upgraded shield, AND have go through the overworld a bijillion more times to gather the materials to upgrade a new shield completely. That is nothing but a waste of my time.
...actually, I think that accurately sums up my feelings about Skyward Sword: A Zeuscurse waste of my freakin' time!
Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda, I own both versions, and have replayed both a number of times. It's one of the best video games I've ever played.
Skyward Sword was the first time I felt dissappointed by a Zelda game.
That's my short answer.

Despite sometimes numerous frustrations with Skyward Sword, they're both awesome games but yeah, Twilight Princess. Perhaps the best example that being an uninnovative, way too brown game can sometimes be incredibly good.
Skyward Sword. No contest. Make sure you have wii-motion plus though. I feel like it has the better story out of the two. I felt more driven to complete the game and see it to the end because I was invested in what was going on. The game also gives you one of the best incarnations of Zelda ever. I really like what they did with her character in this game.
Whereas I feel Twilight Princess just DRAGS on until the halfway point of the game. Is it so wrong that I still don't care about those kids? It could have been so much better. It's probably my least favourite 3D Zelda title. The ending was really good though and Twilight Princess also has better dungeons than Skyward Sword.
I have both versions of Twilight Princess, and the gamecube version is THE version to play if you are looking into checking that game out sometime in the future..
