Damn these NSMB threads!! It's my birthday a few days after the launch, and I've been told I'm not allowed to buy anything, cos, y'know. I'm gonna have THE BEST birthday, playing that awesome game. I'm so jealous though, having to wait, having to avoid all the 'mario-chat', while you lucky sod's pwn it. Not long now...... :$

The only thing I've found it good for is getting coins out of flowers; kind of cool, as it's a nice subtle link to Mario Galaxy. Also, if you do it when you have an ice flower or fire flower, you'll shoot projectiles in both directions. It's fun!

Err, the default spin is probably the most important addition to the game--if you shake at the tip of your jump you get just a half-second more air. May not sound like a lot, but let me tell you, it seperates the men from the boys. It's really, really helpful once you master it.

Ah, good to hear confirmation of that. I've been using it for some long jumps, and I thought it was helping me just a bit, but I couldn't decide for certain whether I was just imagining the additional distance.

It for the first time helped me earlier today as I reached for the top of an end-level pole.
@Chicken LOL.

Related question: I've noticed that Pokey's "dance" in this game seems to remove his spikes and replace them with leaves, briefly. Can you step on his head while he's leafy without taking damage? I've tried, but haven't managed to time it correctly to tell for sure. Has anyone else given it a shot?

Thanks, Chicken. You're now responsible for one of my Mario deaths. I timed it perfectly, after listening to the music loop a couple of times, but your idea was crazy to begin with.

Since this has turned into an impressions thread or general discussion: another minor detail that I found to be quite a nice little upgrade is the handling of the Bullet Bills. Not only do they glance off one another in a satisfying way, but, if you throw in the freezing ability, it becomes another kind of situation entirely. Now I'm not just bouncing off bullets to jump higher, but freezing them for momentary steps, throwing frozen ones at oncoming bullets, and all other manner of mayhem. I can't wait to try out some of these situations in frantic multiplayer later this week.

I also found the use of Galaxy's visually redesigned blueish-glowing Boo's to be a nice touch.

Yeah much agreed on the Bullet Bills, and in fact the Ice Flower in general--that was a really brilliant gameplay addition (I thought the Ice Flower was severely underused in Galaxy). And as far as the visuals are concerned, frankly, I'm impressed. I don't understand all the people bashing the graphics in this game. It's not Galaxy quality, but it's a darn good looking game once you see it in action.

I think Chicken started it, if this is a bad thing. But if you really are honored, yes, I started it.

EDIT: Uh... I don't know how this happened, but I just noticed Mario isn't wearing his hat anymore. Any idea how this happened or how to get it back? Weird!

Also, by the way, I just got 60 1-ups in a row, maxing out on lives. Cool.

Ooh! Ooh! I just figured this one out tonight, and your post further corroborates it. Mario would seem to remain hat-less so long as you keep your lives maxed out at 99. Perhaps it's an acknowledgment of sorts of your skills. Hats off to ya', that sort of thing.

Has anyone discovered any ways in which it impacts the gameplay? As far as I can tell, it's only a visual alteration.
