WikiPedia says 1080p as well, but then it is WikiPedia!
For once, Wikipedia is correct this time.
So theoretically a software update could be applied to the current Wii to allow HD support. Although I would expect Nintendo to only go with 720p/1080i anyway. Even so, the limitation there is one of space. There just isn't very much room on the system to squeeze such a major overhaul in.
And as has already been pointed out...why? It's not like it would improve the look of old games. And it would only increase develpment costs as every game taking advantage of it would have to be developed for both hd and non-hd. So I don't see an HD Wii happening until the next round of consoles.
Me and the Mrs was watching someone play the GhostBusters game in GameStation today and not having seen many next gen games we could see the jaggies (whatever you call them) and couldnt see what all the fuss is a bout. To be honest with you I don't understand the technology, I just am quite happy with what I've got. I personally am very blown away by Mario Galaxy and COD as well as the Mii's when they appear in some games. PS I thought the mountain graphics in Family Ski and Snowboard are rather nice too - but this is me we a talking about here
Oh I believe it is ironic - to think that once was considered a fatal flaw in wii has become a boon to it. While others profusely bleed red ink, Nintendo drowns in black ink.

I personally have no need for HD video for films or television; I think it might be nice for certain games, but for the majority it's not necessary.
I quite agree.
Analyst speculate about an 'hd' wii but who shall make games for it? The greatest news from E-3 was Mr. Iwata proclaiming that their idea to keep Wii sales going was not a pricecut - but compelling software. What a wonderful sense of security to know that Nintendo plans to keep the heart of EAD fully behind Wii. Splitting Wii dev into HD and non HD titles does not make sense to me.....this would weaken 'both' consoles. Do not kill the Golden Gooose becasue her eggs are 'only' 480p, says I.
Hey Eugene, what up? Doesn't it get exhausting registering all these new screen names? Why not stick with one?
i completly agree with Authors points but some people feel the wii is a gimic as of it small graphical power if the wii was to get hd this minorty would die out and the wii would realy become king usaly the develpers are the ones stating its a "gimic" so games such as brutal legend dont get realesed to the wii so if miyamoto saw this we would be divulging in much more amazing games mabey more for the hard core????
I didn't think HD mattered, until I got an HD TV. I prefer to play my wii games on my regular TV, b/c I think they don't look as good on the HD TV (I didn't spring for a component cable though...). I think by next gen, they'll have to, because so many people will have hdtv's. Price on HD is cheaper now too, so I think it's inevitable the next system will need it. Truly though, for games like galaxy or smash or wii sports with more "cartoony" graphics, it doesn't matter so much. (I love me some cartoony graphics, so I'm good).
I also don't have an PS3 or 360 to compare my wii to on a regular basis, which makes me care less about the graphics I think. And I'm cool with that, because I like occasionally having money.
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
All I want from an "HD" Wii is upconverting. The fact that many PS2 games look better on my HDTV when running on my PS3 than Wii games running on a Wii is just sad.

Yeah...apparently, Viva Pinata, Kameo, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, and a host of Xbox Live Arcade games don't exist, according to the assumption made by Chromaticed.

OK forgive me if I'm a tech n00b, but isn't HD just better and sharper resolutions. I don't see how that would affect the development time.
If it is in 2D you may get some weird results such as pixelated sprites, but 3D games are just 3D models that only get to look better on high resolutions. Hence those SMG screens that popped up this week showing the game emulated in HD.
@Rensch: No, you're right. There actually IS a difference between HD and high-power graphics. You're actually the non-noob, because it's noobs who don't understand that difference.

Who cares about graphics when the gameplay sucks!? The Wii is about gameplay, not HD graphics. @MirMicawber-How many alternate versions of you exist? 3,if I'm not mistaken? I think you need to stick with one idenity,Eugene.
What a ridiculous assumption. There are plenty of games that look great and play great. Why would going HD make Wii games suddenly less brilliant? The Wii well could have had HD output and still be "about" gameplay.
