Recently outfoxed on the topic of OOT vs. aLTTP im starting a new thread...
It's plain and simple.
Super Mario galaxy is the best mariogame 4-ever. What's your opinion guys and gals?

Oh... And why isn't Tatanga the main villain in SMG it pissed me of. I miss tatanga :_(

Best Mario game ever IMO is Super Mario World.

Plain old gamer :)

I think this thread has been done already, but what the heck.

My favourite 2D Mario game is SMB3 (I may have said something different in the other thread, I can't remember), but it used to be SMW. I've only recently realised why my mind has changed on this. It's because on VC I can pause SMB3 whenever I like. Without this it isn't nearly as enjoyable for me.

My favourite 3D Mario is 64.

If you're allowing Yoshi's Island as part of the Mario series then I'd say that is my favourite Mario game overall.

Best Mario spin-off? It's Mario Kart 64 for me, but Mario Tennis and Paper Mario are close.

Being largely based in space you'd have thought Tatanga could at least make an appearance, good point Zane.

I'm tempted to be a rebel and say Super Mario Bros. is the best Mario game, but even though I've played it a lot more in recent years, it's mostly because I find it the better one-player experience since you can race through the whole thing in a short sitting. I value SMB3 and Super Mario World more for their two-player modes, and it is always hard to choose between the two of them. I wish SMW were as challenging as SMB3, and I wish the cape didn't essentially allow you to skip levels entirely sometimes, but even with these qualms aside, Super Mario World takes the cake for me as the best Mario game. The joy of finding all the secret exits is something SMB3 doesn't have. Plus, Yoshi and Ghost Houses are awesome, and the music is the best in the series.

Of the 3D Mario's, it's a tough call between Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy. Even though I traded in Galaxy and still have 64 on VC, I'd probably go with Galaxy, but it's close. Both are very good, but they don't hold a light to the old ones. Lack of a fun 2P mode is perhaps the worst part. The length of the game and the absence of shortcuts like whistles or Star Road or warp zones forces anyone but the most obsessed gamer to play it in multiple sittings, which I think is necessary to a game like Mario or I will never want to replay it since it takes so much time.

Also, the best Mario spin-off is Super Mario Kart. I liked Yoshi's Island, but not that much. I find both the game itself and the levels to be too long. And the levels can get kind of boring in some of them where you can get lost or not know what to do next. The earlier levels were fun while still being linear and short. I wish they had stuck with that model and left all the big, winding levels for the dungeons (which always ruled, especially the bosses).

What's a Tatanga?

Tatanga was the final boss in Super Mario Land, he is basically an alien, which I think is why Zane felt that he wouldn't have been out of place in Galaxy.

The cape at least needs some skill, you can just as easily get a blue (or purple?) yoshi and fly through most of the levels. SMW is as difficult as you want it to be, which isn't a problem for some people, but is for me; I lack self-control in this respect, I want to get through the game as easily as I can and need the game to be intrinsically challenging.

I'd like Galaxy a lot more if it wasn't for the 'Luigi debacle'. This almost completely ruined the replay value for me.

I freaked out the first time I encountered the final boss on Yoshi's Island.

Reala

Paper Mario is still my favorite, far better than Super Paper Mario.

Ah, I only played through SML once, so I don't remember the alien part. As for the cape, I do have the self-control to tell myself no flying, but I still recognize it as a problem.

I agree about Luigi. I hate that you have to re-get all 120 plumbing stars (or however many there were) before you can get to the secret level. Who's genius idea was that? And is he fired yet? Chicken, ask Iwata next time he's over.

I also didn't like how Luigi was just lazily pasted in. How hard would it really have been to replace the other instances of him with Mario, seriously?

Super Mario 64
Can you say freedom?

The final boss in Yoshi's Island was pretty cool, fairly easy, but the best part of that mediocre game.

CowLaunch

The extra level wasn't even that good, granted the last congratulatory level in other Mario games aren't groundbreaking either (like 'You are a super player' in SMW etc.), but then you didn't have to finish the game twice to get to them. How many brothers are there now? Mario, Luigi, evil twins Wario and Waluigi, and now apparently Luigi has a twin from another dimension. Talkng mushrooms and plumbers in raccoon suits I can believe, but this Nintendo...

Well, I'm sorry you wasted your time looking for the secret level, Cow Launch, but that is good to know!

Also, I might add that New Super Mario Bros. is fantastic. I always forget about it since I don't have a DS anymore, but I've played through it a few times, and I loved it. The blue shell, special coins in each level, difficult-to-find secrets, and the abundance of canons make this an excellent entry. In fact, I'm tempted to say if it would have been on consoles where I could have played it not only on a screen larger than my hand but also with 2-players in the main mode, it might -- might! -- have been my favorite Mario. It's one of few games I don't mind 3D graphics in. I think the look works well for it. The music isn't as good as SMW, but it's good. My only real fault with it is it's a DS game, haha, and I don't like playing games alone or on tiny screens.

How could one argue with the musical score on SMG it's orchestrated goddammit and really, i don't remember a single tune from SMW but i remember alot of the Smb3 music.
And new super mario bros for ds is for girls btw it's so easy...

Heh, I know, but you can't argue against the blue shell. It's quite possibly the most fun power-up in any Mario game. The baby Bowser fights were fun, too.

I don't think you've played SMW in a long time if you don't remember the castle theme. It's probably my favorite piece of Mario music. Galaxy's soundtrack was okay, but I much prefer electronic music to orchestras. Orchestrated music just seems too over the top and exaggerated for me. I like the music for the stories that you read in the library though, and I love the SMB3 theme they use in some of the short (aka good) levels. But most of it just feels out of place to me. Like I'm playing some epic game instead of a game with a plump plumber versus a big turtle and a baby turtle.

Sorry, little bit of a rant there, back on topic.

I think SML2 might have been considered more important to the Mario series had it been on a home console.

Hey, that's when most of the good games came out. Seems appropriate to me that it be the decade that saw the birth of some of the greatest games of all time and the greatest gamer of all time.

But seriously, I am open to new games. Cave Story and Mega Man 9 are two of my favorite games, and I've already said I loved NSMB, all of which are pretty new. Bit.Trip also rules, and I think I will like Art Style when I eventually download those games... I wish the DSi ones were on WiiWare though. And on the PC front, I can't get enough of An Untitled Story or the Jumper games.

And two of my absolute favorite games, Mother 3 and Smash Brothers Brawl, are both fairly new! Cut me some slack, g! I don't think games back in the day are automatically superior... but 2D games are.

I have to respectfully disagree... I really despised the blue shell. The big mushroom was great, i loved that, and same for the mini mushroom, but the blue shell I can totally live without. :/

you have no idea how much i LOVE the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack. Every other Mario game has had only synthesized music, and I love orchestrated versions of video game music anyway (usually on a soundtrack/bonus disc they'll have like one piece arranged for and played on actual instruments... sigh), so when I began playing SMG, i was blown away by its music. you're right, it does make it feel like you're playing some kind of epic game, but it's an epic game with a plump plumber fighting a couple of giant turtles and their turtle henchmen, which makes it that much better.

the only problem with the orchestrated soundtrack, though, is:
(a) that it is not available for commercial sale, curse you Nintendo! the 2-disc platinum set goes for $60-$70 easy on eBay! you guys want to talk about Nintendo not wanting their players' money for not releasing Smash Bros. 64 and Majora's Mask everywhere on VC, how about the people willing to pay that kind of price for a damn soundtrack??? DDD:
(b) that there will be no going back from this for me. anything produced after SMG that tries to go back to fully synthesized music... i fear it will only be a disappointment to my ears and I.

You liked the mega and mini mushrooms? O_O

Haha, just picking, to each her own. I agree with the last paragraph of your post though. It's odd Nintendo hasn't released the soundtrack. Seems like a missed opportunity. And I wonder what they'll do about sequels. I don't know how you can make a bigger, grander Mario game than Galaxy. I wonder if they've designed their way into a corner. Not only are orchestras more expensive than they are probably worth (financially, that is -- obviously most players will say it's worth it), but after saving the galaxy, what is left? Galaxy was an amazing game despite my few complaints, but I'm more and more curious what could possibly come next for Mario.

Super mario universe!!!???

I honestly cannot fathom how anyone can place NSMB in the same league as the classic 2D Mario games. It had some fantastic moments and levels here and there, but a fair portion of it felt like an uninspired imitation of the Mario formula, with too many repetitive levels, some pointless enemies that don't fit Mario well, powerups like the blue shell and the mini-mushroom which were okay ideas but completely useless except in a handful of spots, ridiculously easy boss battles, too many opportunities for 1-Ups and powerups which meant deficient difficulty throughout, and, for the worst offense, far too many filler levels that were not at all memorable.

Now, it was still a very enjoyable platformer, and I'd say that maybe 40 - 50% of the game is truly great and would have made a fine Mario game; stretching every idea over too much space with so little variation, however, just made it violate what is for me the crucial rule in a Mario game, which all the games -- 2D and 3D -- have consitently upheld: make every level / stage feel like its own self-contained little world in which every detail seems necessary. I was just turned off by so many stretches of NSMB that were dull or monotonous, even though I want to stress that it certainly had its great moments that make it well worth playing, just not worthy of comparison to the other games in the series.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

This is a hard one. My personal favorites are SMB2, SM64 and Sunshine. But I love every Mario platformer, kart and paper to date.
