my cousens console got briked ninty lost another costumer, Microsoft got a new one
tell your cousin to enjoy his or her eventual RRoD, then... :3
seriously, though, have your cousin call Nintendo's customer service line; they've already promised to repair bricked Wiis that have never had any mods done to them/installed on them for free.

Ben Cartwright: You and your education. Adam Cartwright: Education is progress! Now what have you got against it? Ben Cartwright: I don't have anything against education - as long as it doesn't interfere with your thinking!
@SSBFan1999: actually, this problem is being reported to affect users that have nothing to do with homebrew or modding their Wiis. that's what's behind the furor, the fact that completely uninterested parties are being drawn into the crossfire between Nintendo and piracy (though not all people who install homebrew on their Wiis also pirate games, but that's another argument for another thread). :3

I think that person is just a troll that tried to light a fire in here. >.>
@SSBF1999 My Wii works just fine, thank you. And can yours play any-region game? DVDs? DVD-Rs? GBA games? Didn't think so.... I think my hacked 4.X will suffice better than anything Ninty rolls out from here on.
BTW guys, if you have homebrew, there is a workaround to get access to the shop channel again. edit: mentioning the workaround exists is one thing, but mentioning where to get it is another.
@Atlantis: i know, but it didn't hurt to give them the benefit of the doubt after a quick lol had been had. :3

Hey, hey! Easy with the piracy talks! Getting around isn't the priority right now, it's for people who were affected!
My local arcade here in Jamaica has about 95% of their Wii consoles with the Homebrew Channel. They're on top of the 4.2 news so they know updating = death.

He had the HBC, so its going to cost him about 80usd on something that ninty did.
I didn't see anything about the Wii system update doing any harm to the system until after I updated it! I've tried Animal Crossing, and a few other games, I've gotten lucky so far, and had no issues yet. But I'll try a few more just to be sure...
Its not harming all wii consoles and mostly if it hasn't bricked your console you should be alright. However, it is bricking enough consoles that it shows nintendo really should have tested out the patch better before distributing it.
I think it is easy to say that this update was the stupidest idea from Nintendo ever. This update appears to be affecting both non-modded and modded Wiis. This is the first time I have ever heard of a update that can possibly BRICK your Wii. As for the Homebrew Channel, I only use it for emulating older games.
