...Now I know why it only costs $5 at Gamestop. It feels so cheaply made. The parts where you have to find something to scan are stupid. It took me forever to find the symbol on the ship the first time, and the creatures before I had to fight the purple eggy thing. The combat is boring and uninteresting. It just feels like a cheaply made third party game in the same vein as Mario Party 9. I can't explain it other than it feels cheaply made. The cutscenes look cool but the script and dialogue are pretty cringe-worthy. Now I get it.

Bye Bye.

I personally quite liked the game but I do understand some of your complaints. I went into Other M never having completed Metroid Prime or any of its sequels because I hated the gameplay. As such I dove into the story of Metroid during that time and I think that is why I enjoyed Other M so much. It is far more story heavy and I enjoyed that. It's not perfect from a gameplay standpoint and I found it quite easy but I enjoyed the ride. Have you finished the game yet? I only ask because I found that the story gets more interesting later on, but I'm sure many will disagree haha.

Well I applaud you for buying and trying. It does feel inferior to the Prime series, the combat is a sore spot in particular.
Still the story was engaging and the world rich in secrets; backtracking is common, if you're into that sort of thing.

After i sold my initial copy I had some reluctant feelings, so I renigged and picked it up again (for $5).

Miyamoto on his desire to focus more on the (hard)core Nintendo fan.

[The casual] attitude is, ‘okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.’ [...] and to me it’s kind of a pathetic thing.

I really liked this game. It was my first Metroid. And while I do agree the Where's Waldo parts are the worst, it felt great to experience the environments, explore the controls and enjoy its combat system.
All of these things I did like in the game, however can be reasons to hate the game as well. So it sure is one of those likeitorhateit games.

yeah...

yeah it really is. I think beyond people intentionally being willingly ignorant about what any of the more intelligent haters of the game have had to say, my main thing is "so much for Metroid's relative subtlety or non-linear gameplay. That doesn't make it feel more unique or anything!"

But it's also hilarious. Because, normally I'd post the 2 hour video riffing on all the cutscenes of the game and burying it for what it is.

BUT HERE'S AN EQUALLY LONG REVIEW DONE IN TEXT

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=13373815860B43920100

I'm so amused that 2 entirely different groups could spend hours about how a single Nintendo game's story failed. And even if you liked the game...it's too well done to not suggest reading anyway. It goes over why nearly every single thing that doesn't work...doesn't work.

TBH, I didn't think it was that bad. Nowhere near as good as the Prime games, but I love the idea of switching between first and third person, especially if the control scheme were better. I also like the idea of Samus talking more...but they had her talking WAY too much, in the middle of a rather throwaway story. The pixel hunts were a complete nightmare: Pointless and annoying.

If Retro could take certain elements from Other M and fuse it with their mastery of FPS/Atmospheric Metroid, I think we could have the best Metroid game ever.

And I agree Nintendo shouldn't let their games go to just any developer, but I think certain ones are talented enough: such as Platinum, Treasure, or Atlus (an Earthbound game made by Atlus? Yes please.)

So many staples from the Metroid franchise were missing from Other M. I can't go into them all right now because I've beaten that dead horse to death in the past and I'm not going there. I refuse to let Other M ruin my awesome Friday mood here :-P .

I could right an entire college thesis on what I disliked about this game. However, the main thing I missed from Other M was an awesome, memorable Metroid soundtrack. We didn't get that and instead got an ambient/atmospheric experience. Not bad, but it's NOT Metroid. I see what Nintendo/Team Ninja were doing, but I just didn't prefer it.

EDIT: Nice to see you tried the game and now see the light....lol @Il-Fortissimo

ya know, I still enjoyed this game for the most part. I think the gameplay itself was pretty cool actually...yeah...the dialog could have been so much better though....Samus needs to be a little less emo and robotic at times...i felt like I heard her say "I was so young" 50 times during flashbacks. The end was pretty disappointing too, leaving things unanswered completely.
Anyway, I saw this for 5 dollars at Best Buy before too (after I bought it at release by the way :p) and I thought they were crazy! I think it's worth a little more than that myself. Like I said, the story related stuff needed a lot of help, but the gameplay itself I think was worth more than that easy.

Other M felt like to me a guilty pleasures, that I shouldn't have enjoy it as much as I did, but for $5 bucks I said why not?

I remember that was the same year when Halo 3: ODST came out, and I already had Metroid Other M pre-order. The day before the game was release, the review were in for it, and it wasn't good. So I quickly went to change my pre-order to Halo 3: ODST which in the end, was better game then Other M but worst Halo game.

What review did you read? The one here at NL gave it a stunning 9/10.

Most of the negative criticism towards Other M runs on ignorance to the game's story and history of the series, which ironically is something Other M is accused of throwing out. I appreciate it for paying attention to itself and the series in terms of its story, something Retro's games had a problem with on occasion. In terms of gameplay, I like the action and how that action shows how merciless and confident Samus is against the threats of the Bottle Ship. It felt very fresh to the series overall and non-traditional, which for me ended up being a plus and allows Other M to stand out as a more creative game in the series. Having said that, it's been sometime since I've completed Other M, as I've been very Metroid Prime Hunters obsessed lately; however, it is only second to Hunters in terms of my playtime and completion number. I rank Other M around 4th overall, but in the competition for my 2nd favorite against Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 2.

I liked this game but yeah not being able to skip cutscenes what was Nintendo thinking especially when they're that long. Also for some reason the graphics on Prime looked better to me than the graphics on this game. The voice acting was bad but i feel like they could learn from it and improve it. My only complaint with the Metroid series overall is that there is this huge universe to explore and it feels like you get confined to a small area. I guess an example of what I mean would be like how on castlevania you get confined to a castle but I wanna explore the whole world and see what's beyond the castle. (that's the best description of how I feel with the Metroid universe).
