Topic: SMG, SMG2 - Help Me Understand

Posts 1 to 8 of 8

I don't yet have SMG2, but I played it a little. I do have SMG, though. Even though I find it fairly enjoying I never saw myself playing the game for too long at a time. Even my sister, who was super excited about SMG, said that she likes it but doesn't find it to be as fantastic as the hype led her to believe.

Again, I'm not saying it's a bad game. It's a very good game, and especially I like the diversity of the worlds/levels/monsters, which is rather characteristic of Nintendo games in general, not just Mario games. But I just don't get it. I don't find anything truly revolutionary about it, just a very well polished game. Help me understand.

That's about it, it's as you say,"a very well polished game." Sure, it adds new things like Yoshi (<3) and new power-ups, but it's more about polishing an amazing game and making it that much better. So polished in fact, it's very tough to find a real flaw in the game other than reaching for the "it's similar to the original" excuse.

I didn't really like SMG. In my opinion it didn't live up to the hype and it left me wanting. The two big things about it were music and graphics, neither of those made the game for me.

I'm liking the second one a lot more and I feel that it's giving me everything I wanted from the first one. The biggest thing I love about it is that it feels like a true sequel to every Mario game in a way. It brings back things from past games (even stuff from Super Mario Sunshine). Everything about this one feels epic. The music is vastly superior, the graphics look better, it brings back many memories, and the gameplay is awsome.

That's really all it is, exceptional amounts of polish, good but definitely not stellar design.

It's really pretty to look at, but the gameplay isn't nearly as fun as other Mario games, 64 for example puts Galaxy to shame in terms of stage design.

Yeah I felt the same about SMG, it wasn't the greatest game but fun and well-polished. A tad easy.
As for SMG2, I'll get back to you in 5 days.

From what I've played of SMG2, I think the best word to explain it is "Fireworks". It shows you something new that is very refreshing before going onto the next big/little thing that is also very refreshing. However, I've only played to the mid-section of World 2, so I guess you can take that with a bit of salt.

Be careful what you ask for; SMG is one of my favorite games of all time, and I couldn't possibly explain why without one of my gigantic walls of text. You've been warned.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.
