I think they should. Although not at all necessary for success or a good console, i like gaining achievements on my 360. I think it would be a good addition. call em badges or something.

I dont think they shoud. It shoud be up to the devopers to put them in or not rather then forceing all games to have them since on some Xbox games i'v played the achievments feel very forced.

If they feel forced then the developer isn't doing it right. Valve games have some of the most organic achievements I've come across and certainly add a great deal to those that care about achievements. Made me a better Left 4 Dead player actually because I had to learn new techniques.
i wouldn't mind being able to let people know somehow with a Wii Network ID or something that i collected all 121 stars in Super Mario Galaxy (or similar achievements)... that was a lot of work, y'know?

If they do, they should do it the way Swords and Soldiers are doing it. If you do get all the achievements, you get entered in a drawing to win a prize. One of the things I don't like the Achievement/Trophy system is that it feels empty; at the end of it all you have these meaning less points that you can't do anything with and it feels like a waste of time. At least with S&S, you have chance to win something real and make the experience worth it.
I'd like it, but then I absolutely LOVE completely completing games, and wouldn't mind seeing my name up in lights (so to speak) as a result of all my hard work. But... I'm not fussed, I play games for me and it wouldn't make any difference to my gaming habits.
I was thinking more a long the lines of virtual rewards. Lets say for instance you earn "badges" that give you "rupees". You could spend your "rupees" on diffrent backrounds for the home screen or something like that.

Yeah I think they should. Achievements can get you to play games in way other than just going straight thru the game. Mirrors Edge for example has an achievment that has you play the whole game without shooting an enemy wich causes you to completely change the way you play the game. ALSO....Being able to check peoples achievments lets you know if someone on your freinds list is a gamer or a achievment snitch. EX. I played this guy a while back workin on an achievment and checked his and he had full achievments on alot of kids titles showing 11 Platinum Tropies. I was working a hard trophy to get with him...he got it and bailed out instantly isnstead of working with me on the trophy. Never will I do that one again.

That's because that's what Valve made them for. Also Valve doesn't have any arbitrary 1000 gamerscore crap so games can add what they feel like, AFAIK the 360 also has minimum and maximum numbers of archievements games must have.
I think the Steam approach would be good enough, let the central systm record the archievements for games that use them but don't make them mandatory at all. I think it also adds a reminder of what your friends are playing (and thus advertising for the games) when you see messages about their archievements in your community window.
