I have got an extreme urge to play a lot of GREAT wii title's that i played on my friend's Wii (borrowed it a couple of months til he begged to get it back, haha). But i really dont see the point of buying Wii U since i can get a normal Wii much cheaper. Could it be worth it? Or should i buy a Wii U and play the Wii game's on there? What do you guys think?

edit: Maybe getting a Wii-mini could be something i should look into? Since the wi-fi is going down anyhow and all.

If you want to play Gamecube games and Wii games, get a Wii. Wii games and Wii U games, get a Wii U. I got a Wii for Gamecube games, and a Wii U for Wii and Wii U games. If you ever want to play Wii Shop games or Gamecube games, steer clear of the Wii Mini as it cannot connect to the internet at all or play Gamecube games. Hope this helps!

yeah the real star of the Wii are the gamecube games(so much that before breaking my Wii was just a Gamecube + MH3 machine and nothing else)

looking forward to Codename S.T.E.A.M.

With Wii U you can play awesome games like TW101, Tropical Freeze and SM3DW which are better than what Wii has to offer.

It's better to get Wii U and play the Wii games on it if you want to - getting Wii would be worth it if you had gamecube games, but that's not the case here

Get Wii U. It's so much fun, and there a number of games you will enjoy.

Don't get the Wii Mini. Just because the internet is going down doesn't mean you should buy it. The Wii Shop Channel will still operate, which means you will never be able to play any virtual console or WiiWare games if you buy the Wii Mini. You can if you buy a Wii U.

Considering that the Wii Mini is $100 and a refurbished Wii U is $200, I'd say go for the Wii U. It's just $100 more and it makes a world of difference. You can also pick up a refurbished Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuck for $20. And don't worry, Nintendo's quality of refurbishment is extremely high. You probably think they're new.

Now playing:
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Wii U) | Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (3DS) | Fantasy Life (3DS)

Wii U. The future looks bright on the Wii U (New Zelda, X, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, Bayonetta 2, etc.)

I'm back into the Pokémon series.

I am sorry to (somewhat) disagree with the first posters. Remember that the Gamecube functionality was removed later on, so you would need an old Wii to play Gamecube games. So keep that in mind.

Overall I recommend a Wii U. With the new, great games that are coming and will come, you could find yourself with an obsolete machine if you get the Wii. All Wii peripherals and controllers work on many Wii U titles as well. Wii U will soon get GBA games too.

oh yeah forgot about that.
in this case the WiiU is the best and the Wii mini is still the worst and it's only worth if you don't care about VC or WiiWare at all.

Do you know when the cut off was? I have a black Wii and it still has the Gamecube game icon on the disc screen and I thought that it was one of the new ones. I know they said the Wii Mini can't but I didn't know that some normal Wii's couldn't either.

Honestly, the Wii Mini is a waste of money and effort because of its lack of Gamecube compatibility and no way to access the Wii shop. You can't even transfer over your save data from it because it has to connect to the internet for that.

2010....? It's when the family edition came out. Anything with a model ending in 101 does not have compatibility.

I would recommend getting a Wii U. That way, you can still buy the new games once they release on the new system and play the old Wii games at the same time. I think that would be more worth your money since buying a system that no longer has new games coming out for is kinda not that great of an idea if there's an option you can have both worlds in one system.

Seems you can get refurbished WiiU from Ninty for $200 which is great price. If you can get an old Wii for cheap that plays Gamecube games that is awesome too :O

As far as I know, if the Wii cannot be put in the vertical position, that is the one that misses the GCN functionality. Google says it was November 2011 onward. And yes, that was some time later after the black one debuted.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

@eaglebob345 They dropped backwards compatibility to GCN titles around 2010 if I'm correct.

If you have absolutely ZERO interest in getting new Wii U games, go for the Wii Mini. Keep in mind that it's slightly less powerful than the original Wii, has no GCN support and no internet connectivity (though all Wii's wont soon either)

If you want to play GCN games get a Wii that was produced before 2010.

Honestly though, you're best off going with a Wii U. There might be a game that will interest you in the near future and you'd be screwed. Plus its backwards compatible with the Wii and you can utilize Off TV play with Wii titles as well. Wii games also look slightly better since they're going through an HDMI feed. So your best bet is the Wii U.

It seems I have one without Gamecube compatibility... Sucks for me. Had I known that I would have opted for the original Wii, but it's too late now.

How does it work with buying a refurbished Wii U when i live in Sweden? Is it available for us Euro/Swedes aswell? :D

I became clearly convinced that i should get a Wii U thanks to you guys, it is indeed the obvious choice. I do care about online shops and i don't care about gamecube games so clearly, Wii U is the way to go for me.

Can anyone answer my top question though? I need to know :)

Oh dear, there I go assuming people live where I live....

As far as I know the refurbished Wii Us are only available on the Nintendo of America Online Store. Can anyone in Europe confirm this?

EDIT: Couldn't find anything. But I did find out that you guys have the Mario Mega Bundle which makes me slightly jealous because we don't have that here.
