“It is quite obvious why Other M did not succeed when compared to other Nintendo games; it features a female main character,” says Sakamoto, “Mario, Link, Kirby. Those are all male Nintendo characters that never fail to generate good sales.”
“It’s not just about the sales either,” adds Sakamoto, “The game as a whole was received fairly poorly compared to other hit Nintendo titles. I personally wrote the story for the game so I know it can’t be that. I mean, I created a strong, female character that people just could not accept. I apologize if gamers feel like they were emasculated playing the game, but that shouldn’t affect your judgment of everything else.”
When asked about the success of the Metroid Prime series compared to Other M, Sakamoto replied, “Most people who play that game are completely unaware that the main character is a female. This is why it avoided what hurt Other M the most. I believe that if Other M had disguised Samus’s gender like in Metroid Prime, Other M would have surpassed the entire Metroid series.”
“Perhaps for the next Metroid game, we should have Adam Malkovich become the lead character. I can’t wait to write his story,” says Sakamoto.
No it was because the constant nagging and complaining of Samus was a pain in the butt! I wish I could totally erase all the dialogue I ever heard from that game. I will never think of Samus the same way ever again, because of that poop!
Oh and you had to wait for that douchebag to tell you if you could use your power-ups or not. What a load of crap!

Sakamoto is either a delusional tool or the greatest troll of all time.
Place the blame on poor game sales all because your favorite character is female? Have Adam as the main character in next Metroid game?!?
Kirby is a guy?
What?
It's true, samus before metriod other m was more or less emotionless. People don't want to see female character act emotional, why do you think people hate peach?

i was shocked when he said that people who played prime games had no idea samus was a woman. that is one of the stupidest things to come from sakamoto. of course many people who played prime know samus is female, if they played the other metroid games.
I don't hate Peach....
Peach is awesome, at least she wasn't like a dog of a character that Samus was in Other M. Like the total complaining ruined the game!!!
Other M Samus didn't seem like... Samus. In other Metroid games, Fusion especially, she's a BA bounty hunter who does whatever it takes, even disobeying direct orders. In other M, she's pretty much a little girl in body armor, not letting go of past events and listening to what superiors say, even if it isn't the best choice. And that man should NEVER be within 50 feet of a Metroid game ever again. Adam as the main character!? That would sell worse than Other M because it wouldn't be Metroid.

Haha, yes.
Sakamoto should either stand by his product or shy away from the limelight, this apology/excuse: Not accepted.
And that's before we start looking at his portrayal of Samus... this guy's notion of being feminine is warped IMO.
Here's an idea: listen to what everyone says. I wouldn't want to play as a whiny Master Chief. Emotion is fine; just make the character mature. I've heard about how Samus in Other M is annoying & that must be bad.

i find this ridiculous but also hypocritical of sakamoto, because when metroid: other M launched in 2010, there was an interview where he said he would listen to feedback from fans, who played the game and to understand where many are coming from. yet here he blames the fans, and think other M bombed, because he assumes many do not know samus is a woman. so in other words, he says one thing - only to do something else. i liked other M. of course it has its critics and haters, but i enjoyed it.
I just noticed he blames everyone BUT himself here and says that because he wrote the story, it can't be bad... So he's not just the man who doesn't know what makes a good Metroid, he's a narcissist!

exactly. unlike say miyamoto and iwata, who admit and own up when they are in the wrong, sakamoto chooses not to accept responsibility when things go pear-shaped. i think that when gunpei yokoi died, nintendo should've let anyone else handle metroid, be it miyamoto or masahiro sakarai. but not sakamoto.
@HawkeyeWii - Watch your language. We understand that you weren't fond of the game, but the cursing is unnecessary.
Anyways, I liked Other M. I thought it was an enjoyable game with a pretty cool story. I'll admit it wasn't perfect (what game is though?), but I do feel that it gets a worse rap than it deserves. That said, I don't think I fully agree with what Mr. Sakamoto is saying. I thought that it was a good idea for him to explore Samus as a character more, but the one he portrays is not without flaws. However, I also believe that some people were too harsh in their judgement of this characterization. Simply put, both parties are partially at fault but each fully blames the other. It's sad, really. Hopefully future installments in the Metroid series will be able to show us more of who Samus is under the helmet while still presenting her as the planet-bustin' heroine she is.
I foresee what you'll do there.

i too enjoyed the gameplay and the combat was brilliant. but when it came to the characterisation of samus, it left a lot to be desired. samus's back story is interesting but also sad at the same time, but there were faults in the way sakamoto went about the portrayal of samus. i'm in favour of her personality being explored in the game, but the execution of it was a hit & miss affair, and more of the latter.
