Master Hand can be used in Melee without Action Replay.
Rather than give a long explanation, here are two links that tell about/show you the glitch.

i also saw a video where this was possible to do in the N64 Super Smash Bros. (but it required a cheat-device)
4. Posted: Mon 15th Jun 2009 15:54 BST
Yeah,I thought to play as Master Hand, you needed a cheat device in Melee also. Cool glitch, but I'm not going to try it because it will freeze my Wii up [even though I can reset it].

@4- If you end the match before time runs out, it shouldn't freeze. Try it; it's really fun.

Well, what do you know,it does work!! However,it is not flawless,I tried a 5:00 minute match in Melee mode on Dream Land N64,and it froze of course. Thankfully,I reset it and it is back to normal. I used the two-controller method. It is ironic I had this game for years, and I HAD NO CLUE you can do that without hacking the game!

I had a change of heart. You can avoid it freezing a lot by stopping the match before time runs out. The only stages I tried it out on and it worked so far are Princess Peach's Castle and the Temple stage. But,it stangely works well most of the time except freezing one-time and I also found some evidence suggesting that Master Hand was intended to be a playable character. When you exit the match,Master Hand's name will appear as Sheik on the results screen, but there is no character model of Shiek or Master Hand. BUT,the strange thing is that Master Hand's ICON will appear on the results screen.

Do you not realize there is a link that shows you how to perform this glitch? But,I'll quote from there anyway.
There are two ways to perform the glitch. One requires only one controller; the other requires two.
Method One (One controller)This method works on all modes except Tournament, but every thing but Vs. Time 2:00 freezes the game.
You must have a controller in slot 3. Using this controller, place the cursor over the name field on the character selection screen. Now press the A and B buttons at the same time, and you will come to the name selection. Hold the B button, but release the A button, then go down with the cursor until you are over the "name entry field". Then press the A button at the right time. The game should want to go back to the menu, because you held the B button, but it should also want go to the name entry screen, because you pressed the A button over "name entry". If performed correctly, instead of going to either of these, the game should go to the stage selection screen. After selecting your stage, you will be playing as Master Hand.
Method Two (Two controllers)This method is much simpler, but it only works in Melee mode. To perform it, simply have two controllers, and have one be in the third controller port, and the other in any other port. Have the controller that's not player three select any character, and then hover over the back button, while the one in the third port goes to select a name, and have them hover over the new entry button. Both controllers must then hit A at the same time, as to select their option, and the stage select screen will appear(there is slight leeway between selection, but very little, less than a second). On whatever stage selected, player 3 will be Master Hand.I used the two-controller method.

can you unlock the DK64 stage with master hand?
12. Posted: Mon 15th Jun 2009 22:51 BST
I have not tried that stage yet. I have only tried 3 stages. Soon,I will try to redo the glitch and try to use it on every stage, but this will take awhile. Watch this space!

Alright,I tried the glitch again and it worked pretty good as long as you have the match timer at 2 minutes [which is default]. I played Master Hand on the DK64 stage [you do NOT unlock the DK64 stage with Master Hand] and the Dream Land N64 stage. I think it will work on ALL STAGES. I accidently froze the game when Master Hand made contact with a Giant Mushroom.

I'm going to try this if I can get my copy of Melee to work.
We'll see how that goes.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Master Hand is affected by Mushrooms and the Metal Box.
He can also be used in Multi-man-Melee. I just set the world record for number of Cruel Melee KOs without hacking

How many KOs did you get Pikamander2?
