I never choose random. I always prefer to pick and besides, Random means there's a chance I could get something I really don't want like dry Dry Ruins... shudders
Once I played Rainbow Road three times in a row. I couldn't believe it. I was getting sick of it even if I am good at the course.

i only choose random because the odds of the game choosing a difficult track (to me at least) is slim
On the DS game, this is often combined to snaking to create the most irritatingly pointless multiplayer possible. Someone will only want to snake, and will therefore just keep picking the course that is best for that purpose (like the "basic" race track one, whatever it's called) over and over again.
Anyhow, this isn't a thread about snaking or the DS version, but anytime someone keeps choosing a track even after you've just played it, it's pretty pitiful, and generally means that they have some little trick or exploit on that track that they hope to just keep using ad infinitum, instead of, you know, actually just racing. Either that, or they're just thinking: hey, I won on that one, let's do the same one again, and I can win again! And again! ...I sort of feel like the system should bar any track from being repeated for at least another 4 or 5 rounds.
It's kind of like playing an FPS and someone does nothing but pick the same stage, then run straight to whatever cheap spot they know of (maybe next to a respawning armor item) and wait. Just play the *#@ shooting game like everyone else! It's not a contest to see who can find some cheap trick and repeat it as many times as possible, it's a game, and should be about variety and fun on some level.
EDIT: Also, this is why I find online play to be infinitely inferior to local multiplayer. If your friend kept picking some stage, and then doing the same trick over and over, you'd just punch him and say, "hey man, stop being a douche."
This one guy chose Luigi Circuit 4 times in a row. We went there 4 times in a row.
The strange thing is, even if they lose they choose the same part. I won all 4 of those races.
I usually choose DS Delfino Square, Maple Treeway (my favorite!!), DS Peach Gardens, Moonview Highway, Rainbow Road, or Koopa Cape. Depending on how I feel. Sometimes I choose others.
EDIT: I completely agree with warioswoods's edit. And that way you can see the look on their faces after you completely PWN them.
I generally flit between GBA Bowser's Castle 3, N64 BC, Delfino Square, Toad's Factory and Grumble Volcano.
I'm generally happy with anything apart from Koopa Valley or Yoshi Falls.
I'm not a fan of the very short courses, one multiple shell spanging RUINS your whole race, the longer tracks generally see the better players win out.
Not that I;m classing myself as a 'better' player mind.
I like Moonview Highway and Rainbow Road the most because they seem to be the most difficult in the game. But I don't pick the same track over and over. I usually only join online races for a few courses, usually 3 or 4.
Somebody set up us the bomb. Wii: 8703 7486 8875 3789 I love PWN3NG NintendoLife members on Tatsunoko :-)
I always prefer to choose my favourite tracks, but never choose the same one back to back. I only use a Kart though so it's sometimes hard to keep pace with those damn bikes.
Why does it matter what other people pick lol, everyone has a favorite, and most of the time they could race on their favorite track endlessly lol. I could race on DK summit forever if i could

You know the sort, the only ever choose Rainbow Road or that bllody midnight highway one. It comes up, they race it, then they choose it again.
Scared of showing up your limitations?
No, those tracks are easy points tis all, I pick Rainbow Road cos I know alot of people can't handle it, and all you have to do is stay on the track an you'll probably win. My noob-crushers are Rainbow Road, Bowsers Castle, Koopa Cape, I'll pick Bowser Castle 3, Mario Circuit 3 if it's mirror and Ghost Valley if I get lumbered with a crowd of 5000pt dudes and I just to need to win and get out.
If there is a track you don't like, well you just need more practice.
