Topic: Once my wii breaks down what happens to my Virtual Console games?

Can they transfer to my next Wii?
Because I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars for that big of a risk.

Sorry, but Virtual Console games aren't transferable. If your Wii breaks, they're gone for good.

However, you can re-download the VC games on your next Wii and copy the data from the SD Card from your old one to your new one, I think. It might be annoying having to buy all those old games again, though.

That's just horrible design.
I have at least 600$ worth of VC games, there's no way I'm spending that much if it breaks down.
My gamecube only lived 4 years, I guess I'm not going to buy any more downloads.

PunnyGuy is mistaken -- if your Wii breaks or is stolen, Nintendo does have ways to either repair the broken Wii or link your old Shop account to your new replacement (or whatever replacement they give you if your Wii is unfixable and it's still under warranty or whatev'). Your save files will probably be lost if you hadn't backed them up, though.

Silly me. Thanks for clearing that up, theblackdragon. I didn't know that because my Wii has never been in need repairs. One day, I should copy all my Wii files to an SD Card to be extra safe.

I'm back (for the moment)!

Oh, that's just perfect! Thank you

This is true but at the same time I have heard it is painstaking process to go through.

You'd just have to mail it into them. It seems it takes about a week, based on reports I've heard around this site (I could be wrong if anyone who's actually sent their Wii in cares to comment). It does cost $75 to repair/replace if it's out of warranty, but that's still cheaper than a completely new Wii. Nintendo will then transfer your games. If you go on Club Nintendo and register your system, they will extend your warranty, so if you have a new system, you should check it out.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

it's still possible, which is what the OP was asking in the first place.

My Wii had a corrupted storage, and I called Nintendo and they replaced it for me free of charge (mind you that I bought my Wii back in Nov. of 2006 on launch day), and all my VC and game saves were intact.

theres no problem just send your Wii to Nintendo and tell them that you have lots of download stuff(for example additional songs, wiiware and vc games) and nintendo will transfer the licences to your repaired or exchanged wii it happened to me all saves where still on my wii just the channels disapeared and i had to download them again but for free

If your VC or WiiWare games are saved on your SD card, and your Wii breaks down, is it possible to transfer the games to a new Wii using the SD card? Just curious. Hoping I don't need to know but I'm finding out anyway.....

How difficult is it to fix the wii without Nintendo? if you go to some shop with people who are tech savvy?
Even with the difficulty of moving VC games to new console, i still prefer them over discs, since it's actually salvageable in theory. If your game is stolen/ruined it's over...

Sorry, I originally said "yes" but re-reading your query it's acutally no - unless Nintendo replaces the unit for you in response to you shipping it off for repairs. When I first had my Wii mainboard replaced after some ill-considered adventures in homebrew I started out restoring from SD, but this was before the SD menu update and the SD card reading speeds were so horribly slow that it was faster to simply re-download my WiiWare and VC games again. Nintendo are pretty good about re-mapping your shopid to the new Wii (assuming they need to replace it or a part like the system board which contains the Wii's unique identity), so I wouldn't worry about that, though it means being without your machine for a week or whatever whilst they fix it.

The only thing you won't be able to do initially is restore any game save data you backed up for disc games because the Wii won't allow it until it has loaded the game at least once (an anti-hacking measure, I'm sure). So I spent a good 20+ minutes just loading discs and ejecting them so I could copy my saves back.

It's really difficult if you live in a country with no Nintendo representation. I've seen it and it's cheaper to just buy the games with a new Wii again. It shouldn't be like that though.
