Topic: NiGHTS: one of the most under-rated Wii games on the market

Pity on me for waiting this long to buy such a quality game. It's one of those games that always looked kind of interesting, but I never bought it because the reviews were all over the board. Some loved it, some hated it. Whatever. It's fantastic. Obviously it's all about the gameplay, and NiGHTS is unlike anything I've ever played before. Not only that, but the soundtrack is simply outstanding. I mean, really, one of the best I've ever heard. The graphics are...mixed reactions. The cutscenes are "blow-your-mind awesome", but the in-game graphics are PS2 quality. Now, once you play the flying levels it all looks great. The art direction is really wonderful, and the level design is great as well.

The voice acting is pretty bad, but over all, this is a game you simply have to try. I can't say it's going to appeal to everyone, but I would give it a rent just in case. I normally don't like SEGA. This was a pleasent surprise.

I bought it used for $10 and I didn't enjoy what I played of it.

Scared of the future, but bored with the past.

See now that's not helping my argument now is it?

Just kidding Zombies, like I said, it's not for everyone.

BTW, It's much better with GC controls than Wii controls for those interested. Wii Controls suck on NiGHTS

My best friend is a big SEGA fan (or was...back when they were actually making consoles) and he loved the Sega Saturn Original, so he really wants me to try the new one out, but I have to play the old one first. I really don't like to play games out of order. I did that with Super Monkey Ball, though, because really, what am I missing in the first one that hasn't improved? I do plan on buying this game soon though, because I'm probably not going to be playing the original for a while, so I might just suck it up and play the second one first.

I rented this game and I enjoyed every moment of it. I do feel that this game was a little under appreciated. As you said the soundtrack is amazing and so are the flying levels. The voice acting was a bit sloppy but, I overlooked that.

So many good games, so little money to spend.

i loved this game, but the cutscenes were so full of British children it was annoying and unskippable. The levels where you play as the children were also painfully boring. All the levels as NiGHTS however were brilliant.

I just wish that they had gotten actual British people to act the voices for the kids and NiGHTS. The owl actually has a real accent.

I disliked this game. There, I said it.

I liked the original, but was put off buying the Wii version due to the mixed reviews. If I spot it in gamestop used, cheap enough I might pick it up so.

I'm stilll stuck on this really difficult level where you have to do paraloops to save these babys that are floating towards a black hole. Anybody that's played the game have any suggestions? My paraloop skills are sub-par.

@Terranigma
I too wish devs would take a more European approach to some games. I'm American, but I've always loved european culture, and I like games like Banjo-Kazooie and Nights that stick to their heritage.

Yeah..Nights on the Wii kinda sucks. It kind of took a dump on the memories of the old game (which actually hasn't aged all that well but is still FAR better than this). Luckily it sold like crap so we're not too likely to see another one.

I thought the game was a snoozefest. I was gonna trade it in to gamestop but i figured i would be mean and give it to my niece, she hates the game by the way lol

I think it's quite a good game, definitely not perfect but I like it. To be fair, I haven't played the original, nor am I likely to unless Sega release that PS2 remake here finally and I'm not shelling out on a Saturn just yet, don't have the money to do that. Still, I would like to see a sequel at some point.

But for those of us who don't have memories of the old games, it's quite a blast to play. And is the old version really that much better? And how so?

As I've said in the other thread, I'm a hardcore NiGHTS fan and love the Wii version. The graphics, the music, the gameplay - all captured perfectly. It's a great homage to the Saturn game and I really, really can't understand why people say it's a lot worse.

I'd actually really like to know why some people dislike it because all the things the reviewers say (the cutscenes, voice acting, platforming sections) that bring the game down can all be ignored if you so desire. They're just extras - you don't need to go back to the platforming sections and you never have to see the cutscenes again (you actually have to go out of your way to select them if you want to see them again so god knows where this no skipping thing came from). The game can be played to just rank up your scores in the chase sections if you wish. I know the chace sections are a change from the orb collection stages but any hardcore NiGHTS player knows that once you get good, orb collection offers no challenges any more - it's great fun and more challenging to have to rank up those links whilst trying to navigate the stage on a chase.

So yeah, I'd say it's definately under rated.

Wait, so you don't have to do the regular platforming sections? How do you skip them, just get high scores on the chase missions? Well that's what I'm going to do from now on then. Thanks for the tip.

The Saturn version is much better than the Wii version. Mind you, I'm not the hugest Nights fan but the Wii version was just sad. The Saturn version contolled better, had a camera that wasn't broken and had more engaging gameplay. Its hard to explain why a simpler game would be better, but the combo based quasi-3D flight of the original just works better on all levels. And let's not even talk about the awful story and cutscenes in the Wii Nights title.
