There is now a virus that some unknown hacker created that attaches itself to your Wii Internet Channel browser and can steal personal information, but unfortunately there are no telltale signs that your system has been infected unless Nintendo spots the suspicious data after sending your console in for repairs.
This information was gathered from 8 different forums, including Gamefaqs and IGN, so it appears that this is a real issue that's occurring to many people.
Good thing I stop using the Wii Internet Channel browser.
I huess some hacker out there really hate wiis.
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
links, plz? otherwise, sounds like a hoax or people trying to come up with a cover story re: sending their Wii in for repairs and being told it was hacked and they'd be charged full price.

I dont use my Wii internet browser at all. If I want to go on the internet I have my com, my phone or my 3DS. And as TBD says it be nice if you had a link otherwise I have to agree it sounds like a rumor going around so modders dont have to pay for a broken Wii that they most likely broke.

@NintendoLand: well, half the time i'm already watching something else on my TV anyway. plus, (a) my iPhone loads pages quicker, and (b) I can take the iPhone into another room with me if I need to. can't do the latter with the Wii :3

What the hell? If this is true, hackers suck even more now that they got every single console. I use my Wii browser for YouTube because it's way easier to navigate than my Xbox 360's YouTube app - even w/ Kinect. Hopefully this is just a rumor.

What do you expect. With home console like the Wii and Xbox and PS3 becomeing more and more like computers it was only a matter of time.

Well, that's true. D**n d-bag hackers. I hate them. I spent my Microsoft points a bit faster than I usually would have, just because having them sitting around is like asking for them to be stolen by a hacker. Now my Wii can be spied on. Great. No thing like anti-virus either. Something tells me that that will be another similarity gaming systems will one day share w/ computers - anti-virus. Another thing to worry about. Oh well, like you said, it was a matter of time.

I'm highly skeptical of that. First and foremost, the internet browser shouldn't be able to download any Wii-published programs (aka executable file designed for the Wii), and computer viruses can't even work on Wii because of the different chip architectures. Second, I'm almost certain that the internet channel is independent from the Wii system itself. So, even if hackers hack the internet browser with something like Java script, they can't access the Wii console itself. Lastly, unless you used the browser for important stuff like accessing important accounts to something, there isn't really any important data on the Wii. They can't access financial information from the Wii Shop channel because the browser is likely independent from that channel, and, you have to manually enter the payment information every single time you purchase a game.

Yeah, but hackers are really smart and could've found some sort of way to pull it off. Cookies? That stuff is stored on it. And your email password, and possibly more could be entered on the web. Buy something w/ your credit card on the Wii browser, and bang, it's entered. While I bet most people won't do it, it's possible. But if this is fake, I'm happy. Better safe than sorry though.

I use my Wii browser all the time and same with my 3DS browser because I don't have a cell phone or a smart phone. Why can't Nintendo release a decent browser though?
