i liked your sentiments... somewhat.... but i really, REALLY don't see how this relates to cold showers.
What I get from the post and the title, NSMBW was a "wake up call". You know how if you have been out drinking all night and need to get up to go to work you'll hop into a cold shower to just shock yourself awake. Except in this case NSMBW proved that 2D platformers when given the attention that Nintendo gave NSMBW, they can be just as compelling and even more fun than a 40 hour epic storyline driven 3D game.
That's silly, though. What sane person would claim there aren't good 40 hour epic storyline games in glorious 3D?
I think it is time to face the facts. Due to a variety of factors, console gaming is declining. The sand is passing through the glass.
Perhaps Nintendo will continue to focus on retail - Wii can only hope. But the gulf, the disconnect, is broadening. Plug and Play versus Online Subscription. Digital verses retail. Cinematic verses arcade. Local verses Online Multi player. Ownership verses User Agreement. Exclusives verses multi platform.
ummm... not what I was expecting to read after seeing that topic headline.
But hey, I'm a fan of some 2D gaming too, when done in moderation. It's why I'm hoping Metroid: Other M comes as close to Super Metroid as possible. But I really think 2D gaming has been treated well the past few years (NSMBW, A Boy and his Blob, Wario Land Shake It, Mega Man 9), and there's a good future for it. (Sonic 4, Mega Man 10, Cave Story)
The trailer for Other M didn't give me the impression that it's going to be a side-scroller. I know it did a lot of people. It looks more like it will have a "smart" 3rd person camera instead to me.

Considering the DS and Wii are massively successful consoles in terms of sales units and profitability, I'm really wondering where you pulled those "facts" from. I imagine it's somewhere quite rude.
Console gaming is changing, yes, but it's ridiculous to be frightened of it or resist it when it provides all kinds of compelling possibilities and capabilities.
The only reason Wii and DS are successful is because of Nintendo. Major games form 3rd parties - are nearly absent. That is not to say they have poor support on the whole - but no one is investing in them as the future, or even as the present. They consider Nintendo success to be an aberration instead of a model. They look to avoid competing on Nintendo platforms for any alternative.
I-phone is suddenly more attractive than DS - that makes me very nervous.
Nintendo lives and dies with Nintendo. Evergreen software sales will dry up if console sales falter. Only a steady stream of hit, first party software from Nintendo can sustain Wii and DS console momentum.

If WIi were the PS2, it would be the main console of 3rd party developer investment. But it is not, and it is not. This IS concerning, their is no safety net, no back up plan, no help, no revolution.

What the hell does that have to do with the death of console gaming, as you predicted in your last post?!?
The DS has sold over 100 million units. It's the most successful console ever. It doesn't matter WHY people bought it, they bought it. It's clear proof that console gaming is not dead.
(also the DS has a mountain of 3rd party support, for the record)

You're telling me that there are no successful 3rd party games on the DS? Really?!

Because if the traditional console gaming represented by Nintendo declines, it will be replaced by DRM type gaming - that is to say - subscription fees, online stores, user agreements, digital content.
I am not saying the sea change will be total or complete, but these things are eroding traditional console gaming.

Going to the theatre for an entertaining performance died when cinema was invented. Tell me: do you go to the movies?
Traditional everything eventually gives way to newer (and usually improved) ways of doing things. Are you still using a DOS computer? Floppy disc drives?
Gaming is not a movie. Its primary function is not to tell a story poorly or interupt gameplay with narrative and CG. We have moives for that. And television. And books. And Grandpa.
Well, some games have brilliant plots, and would be pretty bare without them. (TWEWY, for example.) We have to accept that gaming will evolve and change for better or for worse.
I want, I want, I am, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want. I must be a casual. In case you are wondering, my butt hurts, too. I want gaming love.
Just look on how many I wants there is in that quote. You can want something, but it does not mean video game developers are going to listen you like obedient servants. You want gaming love? What does that even mean!? There is no gaming love. My butt hurts too...from this ridiculous thread. You have amazed me again, Eugene.
