I want retail games. I want retail 2-d games. Especially platformers.
I am sick of digital downloads. I want 2-d games to have top priority, not be fringe products that end up on cell phones.
I want companies to keynote their E-3 showcase with 2-d games, not to 'promote' a game with a viral online campaign.
I want the games creator to make it his pet project and put the top people on the game - not send it off to b or c squad developers and tiny budgets.
I want 2-d old school games to be released at the holidays, restore console momentum and kick the crap out of the competition, Not releae on 4 digital platfomrs and have no impact and gain no momentum and have no chance at bigger budgets and relevence - true relevence.
I want exclusive 2-d projects, designed to take full advantage of their respective consoles, not generica games that go everywhere and no one cares.
I want games that do not have a lick of unneccesary narrative and explanation, I do not care why Mario has a star on his head under his hat that makes him spin, I just want to grab the powerup, transform and play the game. What is there to think about?
Because I get it now. This is what gaming looks like. Gaming is not a movie. Its primary function is not to tell a story poorly or interupt gameplay with narrative and CG. We have moives for that. And television. And books. And Grandpa.
Gaming is me with a controller and something on the screen that moves when I push buttons and it is fun and takes skill and has a goal,
I must be a casual. In case you are wondering, my butt hurts, too.
I want gaming personality, great control, great level design, laughter in the living room, sharde experience and gaming love.
Well, this is certainly an Orlick-worthy thread. I agreed with some of it, so thanks for posting, I guess... Oh, and I want to know why people are always demanding more, and can't just be happy with what a company is doing.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
ummm... not what I was expecting to read after seeing that topic headline.
But hey, I'm a fan of some 2D gaming too, when done in moderation. It's why I'm hoping Metroid: Other M comes as close to Super Metroid as possible. But I really think 2D gaming has been treated well the past few years (NSMBW, A Boy and his Blob, Wario Land Shake It, Mega Man 9), and there's a good future for it. (Sonic 4, Mega Man 10, Cave Story)
Okay, this isn't going to start a petition that will actually do anything. You know that, right? I appreciate that you want gaming to be what it once was like, but your little rant isn't really going to do anything for the video game industry as a whole. Companies make games to make money. I know it hurts, but that's the truth. Most companies don't make games with the thought of providing solid entertainment, but to get money. Was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (and Modern Warfare 2) really necessary to advancing how we play our multiplayer games? No. In fact, it adds to the fact the video game industry is childish by making a "Who's better than who?" game, giving the better players the advantage over the less experienced ones. It's all about money these days for most of the companies involved. It's a sad world, so we just gotta wait for the casual crowd to die off before we get normal games again......sigh...

Not much here made sense. Especially notable was the bit about COD: MW2. You do realize you described the way video games have worked forever, right?
