Some interenet eople do not really understand arcade gaming....

They think everygame has to have a 'story', and cinema, and voice acting. They look to the GAMING medium for narrative? How sick is that?

Also they are obssesd with 'minigames'. Just becasue 5 games are on a disc, does not make them minigames. Like Wi Sports. Look at the iconic game design and physics of Wii Sports Golf - it is an insult to call that a minigame, it is arcade. PLease don ot 'lump sum' games....

What if Donkey Kong was released today - would that be a minigame? Hell, no. Neither would be Mario Brothers.

Know what I mean? It doesn't matter, the free market is doing very well rewarding good games this gen, but still - it makes the internet environment a little toxic......

IGN: The holiday Wii lineup looks thin for the hardcore crowd. We see this. Gamers see this. What, if anything, is Nintendo planning to address it?

Oh good, I am neither a gamer or hardcore. Saves me from having to be IGNorant.

Your arguement is simply a matter of semantics.

The use of the word 'arcade' to describe a game is because arcades are dead or at the very least on life support with the plug almost being pulled. Donkey Kong was an 'arcade' game because it was played predominantly in...you guessed it...arcades.

So, if donkey kong was released today? It'd be a platformer, not a minigame. Have you played it? Anyways...but it was called an arcade game because the most recognized format of that game was found in an arcade.

Plus, why so angry over the word mini-game? With your arguement, i should be all up in arms because they call Bioshock a FPS and I won't allow that great game to be lumped in with trash like Redneck Rampage!

Who would ever call Donkey Kong or Mario Mini-games?

Regarding games with Narrative well gaming has evolved and it will continue to do so forever, people will continue to expect more, and for games to be more life like, this however does not apply to all games. There are still plenty of games being released that are simple pick up and play fun, just look at the Wiiware service with games like the Bit.trip series, plenty of people enjoy these games and there is not a sniff of narrative. To summarise gaming now caters for a far wider audience which in my opinion is only a good thing.

I changed my mind,I disagree. Wii Sports is a collection of minigames, not an arcade game. But,I still think that Wii Sports is awesome.

how is Wii Sports Golf an arcade game, or any of the other games within the Wii Sports game collection considered arcade games for that matter? last I checked, none of those games were ever available for play in an actual arcade... i mean, there are indeed golf and baseball and boxing and other simulators in arcades around the world, sure, but none of them are versions of the Wii Sports game collection.

My biggest concern about this generation of gaming is the incorrect use of the term "Arcade Game"

I don't understand the point of this. It is certainly semantics. I see nothing wrong with calling Donkey Kong a mini-game if it were hypothetically create today. It is a game, and it is small in comparison with modern games. I don't have a negative association with the word "mini-game," so it wouldn't bother me. The game has four levels that last a minute or two each. That's shorter than most mini-games. Yes, you can keep playing for harder challenges and improved score, but you can do that with most mini-games. Mini-games are awesome, and so is Donkey Kong.

No mention of Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis march again

Plus, the arguement is off base from the start by mentioning Donkey Kong and then later posters bringing in Mario Bros up to Mega Man. Donkey Kong and Mario Bros are arcade games because, as many have said, they started in an arcade. Taking away that fact, they were the precursor to platformers, if not platformers in and of themselves therefore they woudn't have been labelled with the, I guess, dark and dirty 'mini-game' tag. The arguement is confusing from the get-go because of the misunderstanding of why an arcade game was called an arcade game from the get go.

I think it was a joke, Stevie; hence the bolded "Minis."

@Stevie: I think thewiirocks was joking.
EDIT: DOH! Adam beat me to it.

As far as I'M concerned, mini-games are far more "mini" than Wii Sports, usually on a timer. Like, the training modes IN Wii Sports are minigames, but not the five main sports themselves. I also don't really like using the term "arcade" for anything that has never been released IN an arcade, especially not the definition that means "unrealistic," like people were using it to mean with Mercenaries 2 last year.

It's called progress. Like it or not, gaming has and is changing. Getting the top score, or even beating the game, aren't the only reasons for playing them anymore. Gaming is becoming a story telling medium that can, should, and will be, held as, at the least, as high as movies.

That isn't to say that games can't still be about fun, they can, but the really great games are the ones that balance the old formula's with new ideas.

Arcade gaming, as far as I know, refers to playing videogames on big cabinets; I think now a days, it also refers to playing games that emulate classic arcade games. The Wii Sports games are not small enough to be called mini-games, that's for sure, but I wouldn't call them arcade games eather, couldn't we just call them games?

If only it were that simple!

Oh. Wait. Actually, it is exactly that simple.

What was the problem here again?
