Yeah, it is. It's a great game but it got worked up a bit.

are you playing on muso or shura? choosing muso is like asking for it to suck, since removing all the challenge removes your incentive to master the attacks. you should make the effort to use every move the game gives you, since you'll not only fight better but also have more fun. you won't get past a few parts in shura mode without having mastering the controls, whereas muso lets you button mash through everything and takes all the depth out of the game. give it some time and it should become really fun; even after passing it a few times with each character i still was having fun with the fighting mechanics.

I agree too. It was good but not great--entirely too repetitive and the systems weren't as complimentary as I would've liked. Also, Boss battles, which seem to have received a good amount of acclaim, were pretty lackluster affairs as I remember.

Still, given its genre/game type, I hope for more of the same. We can't all be New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but the more that try, the merrier. (I know they aren't the same style--just saying, the more 2D the happier the Swerd Murd. It's a direct correlation)

the game's not perfect, it does repeat a bit. but compared to most old school 2D games it's not bad (ever played the super star wars games?) if it were due to a cheap budget or laziness that would be one thing, but you can forgive the creators for stretching their art considering just how much work they put in to create each scene. there are some moments that hit you only after you've seen a backdrop a dozen times or so, like when you realize that someone hand-painted the thousands of layered stems of wheat wavering into the distance behind you that make it worthwhile to see some things again and again.
if they had created unique backdrops for every room i doubt they could have kept such a high level of quality up; it's a fair trade off. the one time it bothered me was in the temple at the end of momohime's game, the only part of the game i thought was weak.

as far as boss fights, that's a matter of opinion. although they're all impressive and challenging there isn't much of a change in strategy between them, you just have to struggle to stay alive and deal enough damage to kill them. it's deliberately simple, straight ahead action and you either like or you don't. i thought it was a refreshing change of pace, it would be a little tiring if every boss fight were zelda-level epic.

the game was obviously meant to be simple fun and a beautiful sight to behold, and that's exactly how it turned out. there are things to complain about but none of the flaws detract from the experience the designers wanted you to have.

I think it was overhyped prior to released, but since then it seems to be getting a proper reception(it's a solid game but not that great). I never bought into the hype, and so far it seems like it would only be worth a rental to me(especially with the no-penalty deaths).

I'm probably going to get flamed for saying this, but people on this board were touting the game before it was even released. I remember some guy asking what game he should buy, and someone said Muramasa and then admitted he hadn't even played it. I think some people saw swordplay and great graphics and immediately deemed the game a classic. I've been guilty of this so many times, but now, unless it's a long-running franchise, I really don't buy anything unless I've read lots of reviews and carefully researched the game.

I think its not overrated enough. j/k

Its really a niche game that not everyone will like. Because of the great 2d graphics, which brought it a lot of attention for a 3rd party wii title, it started getting hyped like a mainstream title. Its not that it isn't well done its just that it has a more narrow audience then the hype would lead you to believe. So people expecting "the next big thing" are often disappointed and find it repetitive while others are happy with its style of gameplay that is largely a throwback.

After you beat it on Muso, you have to figure out how to unlock the rest of the swords which adds more gameplay. Personally I appreciated it more after I beat the game because now I just run around levelling up and trying to find unexplored map areas.

2D games are better then 3D games so from my point of view the game is underrated.

the lack of motion control was one of the best features! without motion plus, motion control always devolves to gimmicky waggling where you shake back and forth the same way no matter what task the game has you doing. i might lose it if i have to waggle one more time.... besides, what really would remote shaking have added to muramasa?

jbrodack put it very well; it's not a mainstream game but one almost specifically for people who grew up with 2D games and feel saddened by their passing. i always wanted to know what 2D would be like with today's systems, and loved seeing classic gameplay married with modern graphics. if you're not excited by the idea of a 16-bit styled game with snes-pad controls and 2D sprites then this game simply isn't for you, you probably shouldn't even bother with a rental.

you can go through the library of old VC games and find a ton of games vaguely similar to muramasa like shinobi, ninja gaiden, ninja spirit, ect, and i think by the standard set by those games muramasa is extremely good; the controls are more fluid and varied than in most retro games and it has a longer duration, the amount of work put into it's visuals is unlike any game i've seen before, and it's actually less repetitive than most VC titles. you just have to keep in mind it's drawing from a different era of games before you judge it.
