The latest issue of ONM came steaming through my letterbox today (Spirit Tracks reviewed; see what I did there?), and features an interview with the creators of the Metroid Prime series, Retro Studios. It's mostly a retrospective view on their development on the series, but there is one tasty little nudge towards the future.
"ONM: Do you think that Samus will ever return to the DS? KT: We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on the DS or DSi."
Exciting, eh? I'm most interested in the fact that they specifically said Metroid Prime as opposed to the Metroid series in general. Could the ever-persistant Dark Samus still be alive somehow? Or maybe the space pirates are trying to artificially create Phazon. I wouldn't put it past them.
SPOILER Or maybe we'll find out what that green ship was all about. END SPOILER

i'd be happier if the series were over. i think they tapped the well pretty much dry with the trilogy, and that's meant as a compliment. time to move on to new metroids
it's possible there will be a spin-off game or two... but i think that was honestly just a mistake. they've been working non-stop on one series for so many years, you can't jump all over them letting the word "Prime" that has been so hammered into their brains slip once during an interview. i say don't get all hyped up about it, just wait and see what comes of the next metroid game.... after Other M, of course.

I'm about to finish up Prime 3 in the Trilogy package and having the entire series so fresh in my mind I can easilly say that another entry is not neccessary. The story seemed to wrap up nicely and Other M looks like it'll do a good job taking Metroid into a new direction. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the Prime series and the games are masterpieces but lets leave it at that.
