Agreed. I think the narrative elements just need to be more balanced. I don't want to see any dialogue or cutscenes that don't absolutely have to be in there.
I disagree, just make them shorter or have bits of legit gameplay in between smaller cutscenes if you really think you need lots of long cutscenes.

what sucks is that the controversy and lower than expected sales might scare them off from making a sequel. a sequel that gives the new play style a little more time in the oven would be an amazing game.

@romuluxi would pretty much preffer a 2D Metroid 5 over MoM 2

Well for me, ideally, Metroid 5 would have Other M-style gameplay.

Now that i've actually played the game through, i have only few things to say: I didn't find anything wrong with the story or controls. It felt pretty much like basic 2d- Metroid game with the 3d- twist. The story was in the same league with Metroid Fusion. All the complaints about the story or controls is incomprehensible to me. Samus was just like i always imagined her to be (after playing through every game of the series.)

I am LOVING this game. I've gotten to the giant, brown, maneating worms.
did you know those were based off of these guys?

Yeah I played through Metroid Fusion a few times for that article I wrote on Other M awhile back, and honestly I'm surprised that people found Other M to be curve ball. The narrative style, the gameplay structure and the characterization of Samus is exactly the same.

It was the delivery and direction, Kid_A. Plus I think the fact that the gameplay was more or less the same as Zero Mission helped people to overlook any flaws in the story. I haven't played much of Fusion myself, only a couple hours. Super Metroid and Prime were the main ones I played (and loved), and Other M is drastically different from them both.
I made Kid Tripp! PocketGamer gave it a 9 out of 10! You should totally buy it now!

i played through it again for the first time since september and it struck me as being slightly worse than i remember it, not for the reasons most people bring up and definitely not to the level people were spazzing out about though. the story is fine but the english localization was terrible, there had to be a better phrasing or delivery for some of those lines.
the other thing that stands out is how plain and empty everything is; it definitely fits the mood and makes you feel very isolated, but halfway through the "cold, fake spaceship" setting starts to feel really redundant. part of what makes exploration fun is seeing really cool, detailed areas with lots to take in. super metroid and the prime games had some of the best world designs ever and this game only matched them every now and then.
so time has made the problems with the game a little plainer but i still love it. bring some retro staff over to do art for the next one and it'll be perfect. i wonder how new players are reacting to it now that the bickering is over?

The writing sucked. That's it really, it was written horribly. Fusion is Other M but written well.

if you haven't already seen it the japanese version makes it clear how different the english version wound up:[youtube:LDsSF_-mvmU&feature=related]
of course it sounds better partly because you don't understand the language, but the tone definitely doesn't sound as stiff and awkward. plus, i like hearing samus say "babe meturoido".
that reminds me, sakamoto was really adamant about using the english word "baby" to describe the metroid in the japanese script rather than a native word since he felt it was the perfect word, yet in the english version they called it the "infant" metroid. doesn't make sense to me...

Japanese version sounds just as bad, if not worse.

i don't think so. samus' pauses after saying "nani?" actually make sense in the japanese version. in english it just sounds like the acting center of her brain got frozen by the blast.

Well, as a game i gotta agree that this wasn't as good as most of the previous outings. The enviroments just weren't interesting enough, and outside the finely polished Samus, the graphics were kind of bland. Some textures were downright horrible. The thing that bugged me the most, however, was the music. It's either unmemorable or nonexistent, thanks to the fact that Kenji Yamamoto wasn't behind the score this time. This is a major minus for me, since Metroid games have always had awesome soundtracks. Many people seem to have complained about voice acting, but i found it to be mostly pretty standard, and definitely better than in Prime 3. Why didn't any one complain about that? Also, i liked the way Samus sounded (since that's how i personally always thought she would sound/act.). All in all, i find this title to be worthy of the name "Metroid", but just barely.

I enjoyed the game a lot. Been playing Metroid games since the NES and I thought there was way too much negativity about this game.

Gah, a tor file! And if Other M was a movie it would lose the Oscar to M. Night Shymalan.

Yes, the writing sucked, but Fusion isn't written any better. It's the same drab, melodramatic exposition you find in Other M. There's just less of it in Fusion. It actually bothered me a bit more in Fusion, because at least in Other M it was seamlessly integrated into the gameplay. With Fusion it completely halted the pace of the game.
I won't defend the writing in either game, and I won't defend the voice acting. It's certainly not the worst writing you'll see, nor was it even the worst voice acting of 2010 (Heavy Rain wins that award) but we've come to expect perfection from Metroid, and the fact that Other M wasn't perfect caused people to act out a little more than they otherwise would have.

I just posted an article on my blog on why I disliked the game. I think I discussed at least a couple of areas that haven't been widely covered yet. Some of them have, but I included them for the sake of completion. Anyway, I'd welcome feedback either here or on the blog's comments section. :3
