I am LOVING this game. I've gotten to the giant, brown, maneating worms.

Yes, I concur Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the better game, or the best game 2010...

...but Metroid: Other M is my personal favourite game this year.

I just got this game for Christmas. It'll be a nice mix up from the Prime games, definitely. :)

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I personally don't wanna go back to THIS discussion but while the next game definitely needs far better writing, I really do hope they don't abandon having more narrative in the next Metroid game/s.

Agreed. I think the narrative elements just need to be more balanced. I don't want to see any dialogue or cutscenes that don't absolutely have to be in there.

I just thought of something. Samus Aran from Metroid: Other M and Dana Walsh from season 8 of 24 have much in common other than getting hatred by fans (I'm not one of those fans).

1) following someone's authorities for no apparent reason.
Samus, why do you need permission from Adam to save a large black friend?
Dana, either work for uninteresting terrorist or nonthreatening lowlifes, you can't do both.

2) blond and extremely attractive
Samus in zero suit
Dana in psychopath mode

3) Not getting their sweet revenge
Samus didn't end up killing Ridley
Dana didn't end up killing the lowlifes

Do you agree that Samus Aran and Dana Walsh have similarities?

I disagree, just make them shorter or have bits of legit gameplay in between smaller cutscenes if you really think you need lots of long cutscenes.

what sucks is that the controversy and lower than expected sales might scare them off from making a sequel. a sequel that gives the new play style a little more time in the oven would be an amazing game.

Well for me, ideally, Metroid 5 would have Other M-style gameplay.

Now that i've actually played the game through, i have only few things to say: I didn't find anything wrong with the story or controls. It felt pretty much like basic 2d- Metroid game with the 3d- twist. The story was in the same league with Metroid Fusion. All the complaints about the story or controls is incomprehensible to me. Samus was just like i always imagined her to be (after playing through every game of the series.)

Yeah I played through Metroid Fusion a few times for that article I wrote on Other M awhile back, and honestly I'm surprised that people found Other M to be curve ball. The narrative style, the gameplay structure and the characterization of Samus is exactly the same.

It was the delivery and direction, Kid_A. Plus I think the fact that the gameplay was more or less the same as Zero Mission helped people to overlook any flaws in the story. I haven't played much of Fusion myself, only a couple hours. Super Metroid and Prime were the main ones I played (and loved), and Other M is drastically different from them both.

i played through it again for the first time since september and it struck me as being slightly worse than i remember it, not for the reasons most people bring up and definitely not to the level people were spazzing out about though. the story is fine but the english localization was terrible, there had to be a better phrasing or delivery for some of those lines.

the other thing that stands out is how plain and empty everything is; it definitely fits the mood and makes you feel very isolated, but halfway through the "cold, fake spaceship" setting starts to feel really redundant. part of what makes exploration fun is seeing really cool, detailed areas with lots to take in. super metroid and the prime games had some of the best world designs ever and this game only matched them every now and then.

so time has made the problems with the game a little plainer but i still love it. bring some retro staff over to do art for the next one and it'll be perfect. i wonder how new players are reacting to it now that the bickering is over?

The writing sucked. That's it really, it was written horribly. Fusion is Other M but written well.

if you haven't already seen it the japanese version makes it clear how different the english version wound up:

of course it sounds better partly because you don't understand the language, but the tone definitely doesn't sound as stiff and awkward. plus, i like hearing samus say "babe meturoido".

that reminds me, sakamoto was really adamant about using the english word "baby" to describe the metroid in the japanese script rather than a native word since he felt it was the perfect word, yet in the english version they called it the "infant" metroid. doesn't make sense to me...
