Hey All,

The Nintendo Editor of OtakugamersUK ( One of my fellow staff members) has done an article about how metriod other M doesn't deserve the bashing it got. Feel free to read it and give your opinion about it on the website.

Insightful article- thanks for posting.

So here's my take on this: I've played the game, and I like it. No, I didn't think it was near the perfection of the Prime series, but that was an impossibly high standard to match. Sure, switching to 1st person was a huge pain, and I think the game would have benefited from using Wiimote/Nunchuk rather than a sideways Wiimote. This not only would have offered more buttons, but the Wiimote would already be pointing toward the screen for missiles. But, that's pretty much my only gripe.

I think the problem that comes into play is the very same problem that prevents other games from trying new things: The uber-hardcore fanbase. I'm a pretty big Metroid fan (most Nintendo fans are), but within reason. It was the mega-hardcore fans that blasted this game, not the reasonable gamers who just want to have fun. Now, I'm NOT saying the game was perfect. Again, it had it's issues. But even if story was an issue for someone, that shouldn't be justification to dessimate the game in reviews and reduce it to the equivalent of Barbie's Dreamhouse. I heard Youtube rants saying this game didn't even deserve a 1/10... That's just ridiculous.

I think those segments of super-dedicated fans do a great disservice to genuinely legitimate games. Metroid Other M wasn't perfect, but by no means was it a bad game. But judging by the dialogue circulating the net at the time, you would have thought they had cancelled the franchise or something. Those same fans are the ones who to this very day are knocking DKC Tropical Freeze, a game that has potential to be even better than 3D World, simply because it wasn't Metroid Prime 4. I love Metroid too, but it's not the only franchise I care about.

Yeah, I gotta say, I'm playing through Other M right now and hugely enjoying it. God forbid any Nintendo character (dare I say, particularly a woman) should have an interesting history that shows them to be flawed. People are flawed; why should Samus be any different?

And of course Jaxon is spot on; people will knock Tropical Freeze because it isn't a Metroid game. I remember Emily Rogers saying something along the lines of this after E3 - "Tropical Freeze could be the best platformer in video game history, but some people won't allow that to happen, simply because it isn't Metroid." Case in point, the Official Nintendo Magazine in the UK docked marks from it because it used ideas from Donkey Kong Country Returns and that felt like it was using a "safety blanket" - despite the fact that that's what sequels do and that's what make DKC2 and DKC3 two of the best platformers ever made.

Wow! Thank you for your elobrated respons. I didn't expect that! :) Yeah, i think many franchises are held back by their fanbase who don't like change. Huh? Knocking DKC tropical freeze that game looks awesome. Andi is reviewing that game as well. We can use a fanbase like you! We are trying to get more N Fans on the OtakugamersUk train.

Yep it does annoy me quite a bit that I can already see signs of reviewers in away rating DKCTF lower than it deserves because its not Prime 4, when I read ONMs review the game sounded really creative, challenging and overall just amazing but then all the complaints about retro playing it safe just came across as unnecessary and have that as the only negative was silly when you know those sort of things wouldn't come up if it had been Prime 4.
On topic MOM is actually quite a good game I'm just not keen on all the first person bits as they are too clunky and restrictive.

I thought this was a pretty good game... I wasn't overly judgmental of the story and like the article mentioned had satisfying gameplay... It's funny how people knock the dialogue, but Samus pretty much speaks the same as in Metroid Fusion, where it is necessary to know what happened there to really get into the whole Adam/Samus relationship... and actually the fact that Samus was at first not allowed to use her Varia Suit in the first encounter with the lava sector made for some really good gameplay.

That article didn't really sway me, but kudos to the author for at least seeing some faults with the game. Its not perfect but its also not the abomination so many people say it is. I just have problems with four main areas more than anything.

The stretch where you have no option to activate your Varia Suit is something I think that's hard to defend. Adam had no reason not to authorize it and the fact that Samus lets go of self preservation to defer to Adam in this instance is just strange.

The scene with Ridley I think COULD have worked if they had worked in a better way to show just WHO Ridley is to Samus. That Metroid Manga wasn't released outside of Japan and I think something as important as when Samus first met Ridley as a child shouldn't be in just some side material.

Adam shooting Samus in the back to prevent her from following him into his suicide mission is something that seems better on paper than it was in practice. He even left her defenseless when a Metroid hovered overhead!

And the final boss...the game could have just had a Queen Metroid as a final boss...but that final little "fight" with MB seems shoehorned in gameplay-wise. Flawed, but not the franchise killer so many people say it is...

Graphics come after gameplay. Every time. It takes more than being pretty to be a good game.

I sincerely hope it had nothing to do with it, but you don't know with some people, which is why I (tentatively) made the point. I'm enjoying the backstory as well, personally; I usually do, especially with characters who've been around as long as Samus has.

I'd like to thank everyone who read my article!.

It's fantastic to see that people out there enjoy Other M as much as I do (I'm on my 5th playthrough), I understand it's far from perfect but I for one really enjoyed what Nintendo & Team Ninja attempted to do. Much of the hate seems to stem from the story which I can see why people hate but Team Ninja didn't write the game, it was the same person who wrote the story for Metroid 1,2,3 & Fusion.
A huge ball was dropped when the Manga didn't release over here, having read it in preparation for the article I felt it did a decent job of furthering Samus's backstory & it's shame they didn't write more of it into the game. Especially in regards to Ridley as you see just why Samus reacts as she does & can sympathise with her

On the subject of Donkey Kong personally I think it looks amazing and cannot wait to pick it up on day 1!, naturally I would of loved a new Metroid from Retro but I'm more than happy with the new Donkey Kong. I do feel Nintendo & Retro have a Metroid currently being worked on but for now my focus is with DKC:TF

Well I liked the game but after this article I felt like I liked the game a little less LOL. Good article although it was more pointing out the flaws than a balance of both good and bad. Also grammar errors I try so hard not to be a grammar nazi but sometimes I can't help it.

I will hold my hands up & say my grammar isn't the best!. I do most of my article writing on my phone in spare time due to being a parent and working full time.

My feelings on the subject stand are that I personally enjoy Other M so much that I can accept the flaws and look past them. If i wrote the article and buried my head in the sand towards them I would be called out straight away. As I do with any review/opinion I write for the blog or my other work, I am always upfront and honest, pointing out good & bad.

Solid article. I think we're all entitled to our own opinion of it, and you make some good points. I feel like it's become "cool to hate" Other M. The control would have been better with an analog stick and swapping between first and third perspective either should have been streamlined or they should have just stuck with one perspective.

I'm still just not a big fan of the game. It's one of those things that never ever clicked for me. A part of me didn't want Samus to speak... I felt closer to the character when she didn't have a voice (other than the grunts in the Prime games). Maybe as a girl, I wanted to project myself into a strong and silent female lead who isn't afraid to kick some doors in. I liked being this tough and silent bounty hunter especially since there are so few powerful female leads in games. But then you get to Other M and suddenly everything is a little different. Samus' backstory that you made up in your head goes out the window. I'm not saying I'm against developing her as a character, it was just hard to watch how they went about it.

Personally, I think it's an okay game by itself... but it's just not a good Metroid game.

I've done over 35 completions in Metroid Other M since its release, which makes it my second most replayed Metroid game. While I do rate Metroid Prime Hunters as the Metroid Series' best entry, my most replayed by a large margin, I don't view Other M as the second best title rather I have Super Metroid just ahead of it. Still though, third best in the series is pretty much the polar opposite of the groups that unfortunately have become the most vocal with the series. As far as I'm concerned, the ones that can't discuss their favorite entries more in depth than their criticism of Other M are the harm that the Metroid brand is currently experiencing. Considering what I walked into with having MPH as my favorite along with the addition of the Other M backlash, I now question with a lot of "fans" whether or not I could have a form of decent discussion about any of the Metroid games.

Other M had two flaws for me, and no they're not another person's flaws that I decided to take in just to cater to negativity, but issues that actually impacted my experience. My biggest issue ended up being the lack of audio options, as I love Other M's soundtrack but found the default to be almost too low, and then a more minor issue was the auto-aim not tracking vertical movements well (i.e. Ridley and Vorash). Yep, I had zero story issues. That's not to say that Other M's storytelling is what I prefer, I find Super Metroid's environmental storytelling and Hunters' focused multiple storytelling more enjoyable, but obviously with it being my 3rd I did enjoy Other M's storytelling quite a bit.

I loved how it paid more attention to series' canon than every other entry, whether it be her breakdown towards Ridley threatening someone she loves, the Varia Suit being problematic with its burst of energy upon update and its link to Concentration or even Samus trying to find herself again after losing both Zebes and much of the Space Pirate threat. It's also aware of its own story, knowing that with adolescent Ridley roaming Sector 3 taking the time to update to Varia could be more costly than the heat and another instance is the shot Samus took to the back knowing that her character would've resisted Adam's decision to go off deeper into Sector Zero. It knew also that that was a execution trap put in place by MB, the brain of the Bottle Ship throughout the game, and that Samus couldn't die because she had to clear out that fearsome Metroid Queen and protect Madeline Bergman. I have felt for more than 3 years that Other M is unfairly slated just because there is a lack of awareness of series' material and Other M's material or material is ignored to ensure a negativity towards the game. It sums up nearly all of the negativity I've seen.

I'm looking forward to the next Metroid game, but I do have a bit of concern. As someone who really liked Other M, there's a possibility that I may perceive the game as being stripped down. While Metroid's gameplay is great, its storytelling, build up of atmosphere and quality of atmosphere have been what made me really love the series.
