Topic: Metal Slug Anthology

I was so hyped about finding this at a local Gamestop. It has nearly every Metal Slug game I'd want to play on one disc.

I pop it in and sure enough it has the worlds worst control configuration. Typical with the Wii shoving motion controls down your throat. Shake the controller to throw a grenade. Ugh.

Surprisingly there are a lot of configuration but every config uses this same method. The game doesn't support the Classic Controller either which has plenty of buttons to use. Anyway, there wasn't a thread about this game on the forum so I figured I'd post about it to warn anyone else who might see it in the used bin.

I'll still hold on to it for the sake of it's rarity I guess. What a way to ruin the best platform shooter in existence.

I have most of them burned onto disks for my Dreamcast (Neogeo emulators) and they work quite well with the Dreamcast controller.

But I'm sure there are better ways to play them.

I have most Metal Slugs as seperate games for PS and PS2, never got the MS Anthology on PS2 or Wii because of that.
You actually peaked my interest in the Wii version, as I would like to try the MS games with motion controls.
It is a shame it doesn't support the classic controller though.

I think with the Wiimote+nunchaku that there are enough buttons for the game and even then they make you shake the nunchaku to throw the grenade lol. I did a bit of google'ing and sure enough there are people out there just as confused as I am about this choice.

I play in two modes:

  • wiimote with nunchuk (throw bombs with wiimote motion, controls with nunchuk stick)
  • wiimote alone (throw bombs with wiimote motion, play like nes controller with 1 & 2 jump and shoot).

I believe it supports the GameCube Controller which dispenses with the motion controls - assuming you have a Wii with GameCube controller ports. I even have an adapter you can use with a Classic Controller and an extension cable if you're interested. The lack of customisation and unnecessary motion controls did ruin this collection, I agree.

Alternatively should still be able to get the majority of these titles (the first four are the key ones in my mind) from the Wii shop and they offer CC support and I think button remapping, so that's another option.

Sadly though, it only supported the GCN controller's analog stick.

I went with the PS2 version when this released.

Well the D-Pad on the GameCube controller sucks anyway, but yeah, point taken.

Yeah, but there were fine alternatives like the Hori digital controller.

I'm one of the lucky ones that bought one before it became a collectors item.
