The president of EA games Stated that bringing over Dead Space: Extraction is a calculated risk. What do you think about this comment? Also, I guess Mad world and HOTD: Overkill didn't do as well as hoped. Why do you think this is? Do you think they would have done better on another console? Why or why not?
Perhaps so. But if if there were no more mature games for the Wii,then except shovelware to reign. For example,I'm afraid that It's My Birthday will sell better then MadWorld. I hope I'm wrong.
@SuperSonic 1990 - Yea. That would suck. I hope EA's game is more Successful. I wonder if these games were not "successful" because of their shortness vs. their price? I thought I heard MW was short. How long was HOTD:Overkill? I know Rail shooters aren't traditionally known to be long. Of course The Umbrella Chronicles I think is quite long and has lots of replay value. So that's the Exception.
to be fair, madworld was ok.. but not great, the gameplay just wasnt all that amazing... and House of the dead.. it was a MATURE game.. but in no way was it hardcore. on rails shooters are casual,. people nowadays just cant tell the difference between mature and hardcore...
If I can chime in for a sec, I think this "mature" label given to some games is not just inaccurate, but in fact describes exactly what they're not. Vulgar language doesn't make a game mature. More often that not, it makes it juvenile. Does a Samuel L. Jackson-type, F-bomb dropping protagonist in House of the Dead: Overkill make it mature? Does blowing the gooey limbs off the zombies? Funny? Absolutely hysterical! "Mature?" Not even a little. Just like Beavis and Butthead.
I debunk the hardcore moniker in the other thread.

That's all well and good, but you're just playing a game of semantics here. Everybody knows what is implied with the term mature game.
"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."
So, what you're saying is that words don't mean what they mean anymore. So long as they get misused enough to be understood by everyone as something they don't mean, then it's all good?
Sorry, I didn't learn my language only to have it usurped by marketers and their lemmings.

Well, yeah. That's how language works. How else do you think slang enters the common vernacular? That's neither here nor there, though.
"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."
Ohhhh, so thaaaaaaaat's how language works? Words stop meaning what they mean, and start meaning exactly what they don't, and then something about ummm, slang, which we're not even talking about?
Thanks for that. Tell me, do you offer distance learning classes?
Sorry guys, I don't mean to be a prick about this - but if people don't stop sacrificing saying what mean in order to just sound "nice," then vocabulary and clarity are screwed.
Uh Eugene - no one in this thread equated a rating with "quality" or "must have-ness." No one on this thread is thinking they qualify or disqualify a game with sales on a given system.
So, your post and this thread... "How do they relate????"
[quote=mrmicawber]Uh guys - 'Mature' is a rating. - Nohting more, nothing less.
In europe we just have an 18+, less missleading I guess! I don't see much problems with mature games on the wii, idiot newspapers like 'The Sun' have a go at it being on the wii, but only morons believe everything they read in the media!
Mature games aren't just games with swear words in them. There is Violence, sexuality, and other things that parents may not want their children viewing/hearing or taking part in.
@Vendetta - Sorry if I offended you. I Guess I should have said something more than just saying "Agreed". Sorry for the confusion. So I thought about this and this is what I REALLY want to say about what you initially said:
I can see wearing is not really a mature thing to do. Mature means not for children in this case. That's why I said that I agreed on the semantics thing. You were saying that swearing is not mature. I get it. It's not really sophisticated, but when it's used to describe a game, I believe it means that it's not for children.
@The Fox - Is that kind of what you were thinking?

Words take on differnt meanings based on the situation. And yes, common useage is just as important as the traditional definition (hence my mention of slang). Pick any word out of the dictionary that has 3 or more meanings and you'll see a word that has had a new meaning added through being "misused", or used in its non-defined intent. That's your first distance learning class. I'll expect your check in the mail by the end of the week.
@Vendetta: I totally see what you mean. However I believe they're talking about Mature rated games. I do agree that quite a few so-called "mature" games are in reality immature/juvenile, and having that kind of content gives them M ratings.
This simply means you must be mature to see the immatureness of it all.

Yes, correct, too also: on t.v. also, when my son was watching something, with swearing or bad stuff happened, I just (had to) told him it's more for teens - young adults then anyone else, because even older people wouldn't wan tto watch it or so lol
In conclusion, yes risky fun. Extraction I heard is Wii-Exclusive, and uses fairly unique control-scheme, like tilting Wii-Remote for alt-fire, I heard, and other neat tricks you can research on. They might be trying to do things on purpose, or certain-way-of-expression or so, but we'll see. Uhhhm, maybe I'll say more later but for now, yeahp..
@Fox, Different, sure. Opposite though? Like, "your check is in the mail?" LOL C'mon man...
@LTG, It's all good. I'm not down on swearing or anything like that, and I'm not saying swearing is immature. I curse like a drunken, truck-driving sailor sometimes. I just think "mature" is a complete misnomer for game rating. How about saying gratuitous vulgarity or violence or sexuality, etc? Let's go back to Beavis and Butthead for a sec. One of the most hysterical shows ever. Every time someone says "Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...," I hear Butthead's voice. Or like, s-a-y-s s-o-m-e-t-h-i-n-g s-l-o-w-l-y. Sometimes someone will clear his throat and I gotta laugh to myself 'cause it sounded like Beavis laughing. Totally immature. Labeling it for "mature audiences" is like, a j-o-k-e.
EDIT: And @pixelman, I'm with ya that you gotta be mature to see the immatureness of it. Why not just rate games with the movie rating system though? "R" makes more sense than "Rated M for Mature." /cool, deep, gravelly macho voice
