For some, perhaps. I love multiplayer, but also love pwning games in single player. By doing so, you then learn all there is to know, and therefore win in multiplayer more often. I often time trial on MKWii, it's one of the most enjoyable aspects of Mario Kart for me, I'm always looking to squeeze that little bit more out of myself.
EDIT: BTW PinkLink, can we get married and haz internet kidz?
what, you gonna come after me for not elaborating more?

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
I personally disagree that they are mediocre as single-player, but I do agree that they are better as multiplayer.
Depends on the game, really. Mario Golf for Gamecube offered a really great single player mode that, personally, I enjoyed more than the multiplayer. Mario Baseball for Wii had some pretty solid single player as well. Yes, they're better in multiplayer, but even Mario Kart is fun in single player (especially time trials)

That game, I was addicted to. I think Mario Kart Wii is very close to it, but it's not a fair game like Kart 64 was. The Wii version tries to get you when you are in the lead, and this leads to frustration when you are playing solo.
Super Mario Kart was also above average in the solo department, for Kart standards.
Mostly no but some yes, Mario Kart series all of them are both great single- and multiplayer (yes multiplayer is better but single player mode aka time trails and Grand Prix have also great replay value and help you train for online racing) while Sport games some of them like Mario Strikers Charged (Mario Strikers Charged Football PAL) and Mario Super Sluggers i do agree but single player wise it's still not bad just a bid repetitive while both Mario Golf series and Mario tennis series are in my opinion 100% awesome as Mario kart in fact the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance version of both Mario Golf and Mario Tennis is in my opinion the best sports game ever made cause it's both RPG and Sports which is a unlikely match-up but surprisingly deep not story deep but gameplay and a strange way to be excited playing sports plus it had great multiplayer same as it's console counter part however i will admit Mario Hoops 3 on 3 ( Mario Slam Basketball PAL) is a bit mixed reaction but still fun while Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games ( Beijing one and so far it's my least favorite but still fun while i haven't bought the sequel yet but i will in time for Vancouver 2010)
I agree, which is one of the reasons I love MKWii, cause of the online. Play multiplayer whenever you feel like it. Of course that never beats local, but still.

Ever heard of punctuation? I gave up trying to read that.
Mario Kart is a lot better in multiplayer (especially Battle Mode other than the terrible Battle Mode in the Wii version), although single player is pretty fun, as well.
However, Mario Superstar Baseball for GameCube is great in single player. It's so fun, challenging, and long to beat the Story Mode (for lack of a better term) on the higher difficulties, and it's a great challenge beating all of the achievements for the different characters (a lot of which can only be done on the higher difficulties) in order to make them superstar players.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

Like almost everyone else, I have to wholeheartedly disagree with that statement. There is some fun to be had without multiplayer/online in every Mario sport and kart game.
