So the announcement that many people thought wouldn't happen happened, and that was the announcement of Mario Party 9. Will this game learn from the flaws that Mario Party 8 had? Here's the official trailer.
When I first heard about Mario Party 9, I thought, "Oh no, not another one!" After watching the trailer, I must say I am impressed. It must be because the developers took 4 years to think of some fresh ideas. I love the New Super Mario Bros. Wii theme and the fact that those wretched Koopa Kids (not to be confused with the awesome Koopalings) have been replaced by Bowser Jr. The music is nice and the animation doesn't look as generic as before. Kudos to the developers for making this game widescreen, too. I'll have to rent this game first, though.
good to see that Shy Guy and Koopa are now playable :]
the boards look 100x better now maybe cause they're based off of NSMB
Although I have 3 concerns
1. Why are they all in a car?? 2. Why does the dice block only go up to 6? 3. Why aren't coins collected when landing on blue spaces??
The car is probably a gameplay mechanic or someone triggered something. I guess the die only goes up to 6 so it'd be closer to an actual board game. It might also be a balancing thing. In the old Mario Party games people could get real far ahead with die rolls from 1 to 10. I have no idea about the 3rd point though.

... Are there 5 players? Because that minigame with Mario riding on a machine chasing after Peach and Yoshi had Wario at the top and Dry Bones at the bottom....
For those who haven't payed attention to these things, the primary Mario Party devs — who had been with the series from its earliest games — left Hudson to join Nd Cube, a dev company owned by Nintendo. They then went on to create Wii Party, the first "party" game to be developed by a Nintendo subsidiary instead of Hudson, an independent but cooperating company.
Did Nd Cube create this one as well? I'm guessing they did, and that the greatly improved graphics and games are the result of the additional resources, assets, and collaboration they now have to draw upon, being Nintendo-owned now instead of in an outside studio.

This looks surprisingly not-terrible for a party game! I love how the content is actually based somewhat on the Mario games themselves instead of being random excuse-settings. Although that music is terribly generic. Every Mario Party uses such similar songs.
Yes, as I was saying, Nd Cube consists of some of the main ex-Hudson devs responsible for the whole MP series, but it's owned by Nintendo instead of Hudson, so I'm guessing (and hoping) that this means much greater overall quality and polish.

I was quite excited when I saw that a new Mario Party game was announced, but after watching the trailer yesterday, that excitement tripled. The new mini games look very fun, as well as the boards. Hopefully this game will bring back some of the challenge to the series that MP 8 removed, though (like having to actually purchase stars)...

@kkslider: Indeed they did. Instead, whenever you got to Toad, he just gave you the stars, so the game relied on cheating AI and booby-trapped boards to taper the amount of them you could amass. Still, though, I'd always end up with around 10 stars after playing through every map (bonus stars included)...
