Also, as far as Nuts and Bolts goes, I quite like that game - it's not as good as the '64 titles though.

Why do people like nuts and bolts i dont get it i rele dont i mean im all for people liking different games the market would be very small otherwise but i just done get the game i bought it expecting it to be awesome and then nothing hated it its gathering dust in a drawer

Depends on your definition of "keeping afloat" I guess...the gamecube may have been in 3rd place in the "console wars" that generation, but it was still a profitable system for Nintendo.

The decline in sales was drastic at the end of the Cube's life. I was working in retail at the time, and the GameCube took up less and less shelf space until it barely had an appearance in the store. It may have been profitable in the beginning, but at the end it was dead in the water.
