Topic: Smash Bros. Brawl - "Unable to read disc"

I just popped in Smash Bros. Brawl and I got the infamous "unable to read disc" error. After removing and putting in the disc multiple times, it finally worked.

Is my Wii disc drive dying? Or is this a common problem that is easily fixed?

Contact nintendo, send them your wii.

Edit: you'd think if it was so 'infamous' that you would know what to do, huh?

I already had this problem last year, a few months after I bought my Wii. They fixed it last time for free, and I really don't want to go through this again.

Well if you want to play Wii games, you kinda have to go through it again :3

If it's still under warranty I don't see what the deal is, it's quick and easy to send it and have it repaired.

Got another disc you can try? Preferably a dual-layered one.

Yeah I'd try another disc. It might just be Brawl. I had the same problem with it a couple of years ago. Ended up having to get rid of it.

Well after restarting my Wii, the game works now. I don't know if it's temporary, but the game plays fine now.

EDIT: I spoke too soon. I removed the disc and put it back in the Wii, and now the game doesn't appear on the disc channel.

I hope Skyward Sword isn't on a dual-layer disc, or else I'm screwed if I don't get my Wii fixed.

...did you try another disc? It might just be SSBB that's messed up. Did you even read the two posts above yours u_u

All my other games work. NSMBWii, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Wii Sports Resort...

I think it's because SSBB is a dual-layer disc. Nintendo must not have put an updated disc drive in my Wii I'm guessing.

How do you know if a game is dual layer? Does it say on the box? Or is there a symbol on the disc somewhere?

What I meant by my last post was: "I don't think Nintendo put an updated disc drive in my Wii when they repaired it. Why else would this same issue pop up a year later?"

I came across the same problem when playing Subspace Emissary. 1/4 of the time it said that after completing the stage but before saving... But it doesn't matter anymore as I have gone 100% through Subspace Emissary by now.

You can tell a disc is dual layered because it's thicker than a typical game.

I asked this same question on Yahoo answers, and one of the people said that dual-layer discs are gold-colored, and single-layer discs are silver.

You may not want to go through it again, but it looks like you have to — you already know what to do, apparently. You'll fight with it, and it may work sometimes, but in the end you're going to have to contact Nintendo. Be quick, though — your warranty is updated after any repair to be a full year from that point iirc (at least that's what happened with my DSi when i sent it in) so don't let the new warranty lapse without having it repaired again.
