Topic: Is Wii Play really that bad?

When I bought my Wii, the first games I purchased for it were Wii Play and Super Mario Galaxy. I've been around this website for a few months now, and one thing I've noticed is that Wii Play is almost unanimously considered an abomination, at least when it is being compared to other games on the Wii. You would think that Wii Play would be immediately overshadowed by Super Mario Galaxy, which is widely considered to be the better game. How anyone could label this game as garbage is beyond me, because for $10 you are getting a very solid game that has decent replay value and an excellent multiplayer game. (despite the fact that the game will only support two players.)

Is Wii Play really that bad? Let's take a look at the game from a different perspective.

Wii Play costs $50, and this is by no means a bad thing. Essentially, you are paying $40 for a Wii Remote, and $10 for Wii Play. I think most of us give Wii Play a bad rap simply because it's associated with this $50 price tag, and I'll be the first to admit that Wii Play is not worth that much money. Imagine if Wii Play was a Wiiware game though. $10 sounds like a very reasonable price for what is essentially a Wiiware game on a disc. I know that any of the reviewers for this website would have no problem giving Wii Play a score of 8 or 9 if it were on Wiiware. Is the fact that Wii Play is on a disc a problem?

I found 2 or 3 of the games to be a bore in single player, but when my cousin came over to play the same 3 games in multiplayer, we were having a ton of fun! Even without another person to play with, Wii Play more than delivers when it comes to replay value. I've spent many hours trying to achieve gold medals in all of the events, which believe it or not, is actually pretty fun.

Again, I'll ask: Is Wii Play really that bad? Is there anyone who likes the game besides me?

If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

I like Wii Play a lot, and I agree wtih everything you pointed out. As far as I know, most other people like the game, too. I've heard some people say it's a little shallow (and compared to Wii Sports, it is), but I don't really hear people calling it a bad game.

Wii Play is worth it for laser hockey alone. The other games are pretty fun too.

^^ yep, also if you hold a+b before the game starts you get an air hockey pad instead of that lame bar....(for laser hockey)

I have no problem with Wii Play. All the minigames are fun, especially with friends. It's a little shallow, but it's a lot of fun and that's enough for me.

I hate it. Every mini game on it is horrible.

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

I find nothing wrong with it. Its great with 2 players and nice presentation. I love the shooting gallery, table tennis, and laser hockey. The only game I don't care for is fishing. Otherwise good game its not much for single players but more fun with 2 players.

To be honest I enjoy the simplicity of the title.

@RandomWiiPlayer: I'm sorry to hear that. It's definitely not for everybody, but I wouldn't label every mini-game as "horrible". All of the games on the disc (even the 2 or 3 boring ones) do a great job utilizing the Wii remote in interesting ways (which may not impress anyone now, since the wii has been around for a few years now), and if you give the multiplayer a try, it's very fun. I'd also argue that it does have more variety than Wii Sports, and many of the games might will appeal to a broader audience. Truthfully, Wii Sports and Wii Play compliment each other quite nicely.

If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

@Tony: I also enjoy Wii Play for its simplicity. It's a nice game to play after long sessions with Okami, or Ocarina of Time. Both of them are great games, but they require a lot from the player. Wii Play's simplicity is one its best qualities.

Compare it to wii sports which is a free game u get with the Wii! What if Nintendo would have sold the Wii with Wii Play instead?

You probably think the game is good because it's only 10$.

A link to the past on VC is 8$. That's a good game!

@retrobuttons: I have purchased Link to the Past form the Wii Shop Channel, and I do agree that it's a great game. In fact, much more of a great game than Wii Play if you factor in its superbly designed puzzles, excellent music, and gameplay elements that were ahead of its time.

However, Wii Play deserves credit for its enjoyable and simple games. They are entirely different, but I do enjoy Wii Play more than Link to the Past sometimes. It just depends what type of game you prefer.

If you think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is hard, try Super Mario Bros. 3.

@DK vs. KK

Would u consider wii play a good game if it was full price?

It's not full price though, is it.

And what if? It wouldn't have sold very well and this thread wouldn't exist. Meh!

As a product it can't really be judged on sales or price point, because of the inclusion of a Wii-mote. That messed all the figures up and the game did way better than it should. Still fun though.

If it had been $50, then as Machu said, it would not have sold very well. But, what if every single game was $10? What if $10 was the full price for all Wii games? If that were the case, I thinks Wii Play would still be considered a great game. Just because people wouldn't buy it at full price, doesn't mean it's not a fun game.

@retrobuttons: but it's not. what's the point of arguing it?

either way, Wii Play is a glorified demo disc IMO. it's all right to mess around with when you first get your wii, but after that first fifteen minutes most people move on. 's cool that it's got its fans, i guess. :3

@blackdragon

If a game is only good when it's 10$, then how good is it really if the qualification good is influenced by the price? A link to the past was good full price and is good for 8$. Wii Sports Resort is good full price and would be good if it was 10$.

You can have some fun with wii play if u qualify it as ok for something that comes with a wii mote for 10$ more.

but looking at the game objectively, without considering the price and the fact it's a pack in, i can't see how anyone can consider some very shallow and low production mini games good!

how do we even know what the 'full price' of Wii Play would've been anyway? for all we know it would've been $10, for all the work it seems it took for them to slap together a few lame minigame/tech demos.
