I'm sure many HDTV owners realise that having Widescreen for wii gaming opens up a whole new world to gaming, it makes the experience feel much more immersive, grand, eye popping and wonderful....But since the Wii is 'Anamorphic Widescreen you have to put up with a softer image.....but if you select 4:3 on your HDTV settings, Wii games will in fact look super crisp/clear and beautiful, the way they were intended to look.

Personally, i can't stand a soft image, unless it's retro gaming....But it's next to impossible for me to give up widescreen...It makes titles like New Super Mario Bros Wii 1 million more times fun to play while being totaly magical to look at....4:3 completely blows, but damn does it make the Wii look more impressive regarding clearness & detail....But at the same time it ditches that amazing widescreen. I vote for Widescreen if the title supports it! B-)

Which setting do you prefer on your HDTV?

If it makes you feel any better I've had a Wii for almost 4 years, and i'll be buying an HDTV in a couple of days ;) :p Anyways, best possible image for your Wii on your HDTV seems to be....

Component Cables
480p
4:3

But, for that amazing widescreen goodness, there's the more mondo epic Widescreen. Either way you cut it, you have to take the good with the bad, personal preference i guess.

I guess that helps. :P
At this point I'm just going to get a Wii U to catch up on what I missed out on and a Gamecube to replay those great games. I'll come back and give a real answer when that day comes. :)

I should really get a widescreen TV soon. Alot of Wii games are made with Widescreen in mind and playing them on a standard TV just doesn't look right. For example Castlevania Rebirth on Wiiware only has resolution settings that fit a widescreen TV. You'll never have a perfect image on a regular TV. The moon in the background looks oval and it bugs the crap outta me. It's getting to the point where developers just assume everyone uses widescreen.
It sure was easier before all this widescreen craze. You basically need two TV's now.
One for all your old games and another one for widescreen HD.

I assume you're referring to older games being in 4:3 aspect ratio - if so, at least some (if not all) HDTVs allow you to change the ratio on-screen (i.e. if I hook up my SNES, I set the TV to display it as 4:3 so everything is in proportion). As a result, one TV will work properly.

As for your question WaveBoy, I play widescreen - I've never compared the two ratios though, but I doubt I'd notice the difference in picture quality.

16:9 not 4:3..... same number of pixels on the screen in both cases but bigger view in 16:9. If it was with Wario Land Shake you might have an argument but even then I don't think it's worth the effort changing it just for one game.

I guess this argument is kinda like "do you like this small 1080p screen or this bigger 1080p screen more?". The bigger screen obviously wins EVEN THOUGH there is more noticeable blurryness on the bigger screen. No contest.

Just curious, why do you mention Wario specifically?

I'm glad this topic was posted though, I'd never looked into digital anamorphic formats (I'd read about it for film before) and hadn't realised that there was the same number of pixels in each case.

because this is what Wario Land Shake looks like in widescreen mode
Untitled
so there's no advantage. I don't know of any other Wii game that does that.

My TV sucks so I don't know.
Planning to get a new one before the Wii U is released though. :)

I have played my Wii in widesceen before and I was pretty happy with it, although I found it harder for playing Goldeneye in widescreen as it takes longer to move the Wii Remote to the edge of the screen to turn around.

Oh you will definitly notice the difference, and you don't need to bother setting your Wii console to Full screen in the menu option. Instead, in all of it's 5 second gloryness just find he TV ratio option with your TV remote and switch it to 4:3. :p And it's not just some tiny little mild difference, it's almost like a night and day difference, it's clearly noticable....Or my name's not Jeff Spiccoli Ravioli B-)

There is no effort in switching Wii games to 4:3 if you even want to, its the simple click of the TV remote. No need to go to the Wii's menu and switch it to Full screen. But I agree with you that the bigger/widescreen is absolutely wonderful and completely shatters the superior sharper/clearer 4:3....But it still annoys the hell out of me that it does in fact offer a better looking image. That's 480p for ya, anamorphic widescreen is the pikmin S***''s. :p

But, there are titles that weren't exactly designed with Widescreen in mind anyways, like both the Resident Evil Archives titles, Klonoa(I'm pretty sure) and Wario land Shake it! ect...Those Brown Boarders on the side annoy the hell out of me. They're good because you can check your objectives and so on, on the fly without having to keep pressing start to pop open the menu/chart but it's uglier to look at. :p
Part of me wished i had never clicked the 4:3 option on the tv remote which clearly revealed the super sharper gnarly superior visuals. lol

That really bugs me about how Warioland shake it was set up. You can't play it in Widescreen or you'll get those stupid spaces on the edges. I can't figure out for the life of me why they'd have it look like that in widescreen.

Then it's just a widescreen display squished into a 4:3 box. You need to change the Wii settings also.

To get an 'idea' of how the visual difference looks regarding the superior PQ you don't. But ya you're right, it's ideal to switch unless you wan't some mild squishyness. :P

Me neither...At least have the option to ditch the Brown Item Boarders, i mean they just don't contrast well with the image. However on an HDTV, you can just switch it to 4:3 and whalla they're gone! with better visuals in the process. Yet
What realllly, irks me is if you're stuck playing Kirby's Epic Yarn on a Full screen SDTV...Nintendo opted for those ugly light brown yarnish Boarders on the top and bottum, and the end result is almost puke worthy, since it doesn't contrast well at all with the screen. An option to have black boarders, or to play them the game period on an SDTV in FULL 4:3 would of been pretty awesome.

Kirby's Epic Yarn, DKC Returns and NSMBWii are 10x better on an HDTV.

I didn't know ReBirth was designed to be widescreen...I was actually playing it on an HDTV 2 days ago and it automatically went to 4:3. But ya, Link I think it's time....or 'we'(lol) both made the upgrade. Make sure you find a set with the lowest amount of input lag possible.

Personally, HDTV wise, i wouldn't go any smaller than a 37" when it comes to the Wii. 37", 40" & 42" seems like the perfect size....But, the lower you go the crisper the image will look when set to widescreen. But a bigger screen is always more amazing, but since the Wii isn't HD and since Anamorphic widescreen makes the PQ a little soft going too big isn't always a good idea...I wouldn't go beyond 42" personally.

Anyways, I'm thinking of scoring the Samsung 2011 PN43D450 720p Plasma.....That or maybe the Samsung LN40D450 1080p LCD, but I'm leaning towards the plasma since color and motion are guaranteed to better, which would make movie watching especially more enjoyable muhaha. b-)
