I'm in Mexico, here no one pays attention to ratings, and parents don't care if their 8 year old son plays GTA, I've always been able to play whatever game I want; I'm not sure if that is such a bad thing, of course I wouldn't recommend MadWorld to an 10 year old, but I've always believed the ratings in USA are a bit harsh.
technically i'm 17 and bought Madworld myself, but i found the game repetitive anyway so when my dad said i shouldn't be playing it, i sold it
My parents never restricted the types of games I was allowed to play, but then again I'm pretty self-policing in that regard. The violent stuff rarely appeals to me (too often it's an excuse for uninventive gameplay) and it just so happens that nearly all of my favorite games of all time came directly from the "kid friendly" Nintendo.
i did have a copy of Madworld but my dad wanted me to get rid of it....so i sold it and bought Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time
so instead of making you a ruthless murderer he's making you a geek murderer kidding
actually, yea he kind of did! instead of killing criminals with spiked baseball bats, i kill cute little fox enemies and one-eyed pterodactyl monsters with my sword

Well, nice to know it was basically your choice to sell it , I know not everybody up there follows the ratings but certainly a lot more people than here does .

I had such a bad gaming experience when I played Midway's The Suffering that I avoid games with sexual content and excessive gore and cursing. In my opinion that stuff just cheapens the game play. I do play Resident Evil and Silent Hill since they are more story driven than gore driven. So I guess I have self imposed restrictions.
Well, being 25, and earning money, there's no limitations to what I can play. I've been playing games since 1989, there wasn't an "Adult" themed game that was popualer until Mortal Kombat came out, and even then I tried it out on an Arcade without telling my Mum when I 9 years old, even though the game was gory Ididn't like the gameplay of it and prefered Street Fighter over it. Then when the PlayStation came out, I was still a Nintendo FanBoy durring the mid and late 90s and I really didn't get into "Adult" themed games. Since then I have bought games like GTA and they really don't do anything for me, though I was suprized with games like Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Silent Hill, No More Heroes and Mad World. Maybe because they stay away from "being real" and try to be more "Action Movie". Not Saying that Mortal Kombat is anyway "realistic", it so isn't, I just didn't like the controls, lol.
I remember my parents being a little concerned all those years ago when they saw me playing the original Double Dragon, just due to the idea of enjoying a fantasy of beating people up in the streets... they were always a bit suspicious of video games anyway, restricting their usage to 30 minutes on school days / 1 hour on weekends, but I respect that now that I'm older.
I'm glad this site hasn't gone the route of so many gaming blogs that obsess with the pointless cause celebre of gaming censorship. There is actually something to be said for judging video games much more harshly than films and other media. When there's violence on screen in a film, it might in some cases invite the viewer to enjoy the violent act and the pain (those damn Saw movies...), and I often find that very problematic, but having it in a game is actually much worse. There's no longer any question of "is the viewer empathizing with the victim or putting himself in the place of the torturer?", since you're clearly being asked to enjoy going through the motions of the acts yourself, directing the attacks or abuse. Unfortunately, most blogs can't distinguish between issues of censorship and issues of bad taste and entertainment that tends towards the unethical.
Anyhow... this is to say that, for those of you who are younger and can't play certain games, that's not necessarily a bad restriction.

I will let my 8 year old boy play pegi 12+ games after checking them out for myself. So far that includes Brawl, Guitar Hero Aerosmith, Links crossbow and Onslaught. Brawl, Guitar hero and Link was nobrainer. Onslaught I gave a little more thought. He also isnĀ“t allowed to play to close to his bedtime, about an hour. I will most probably hide The Conduit from him.
I'll add that sometimes the forced empathy is even too much for me. Despite being unphased -- and unimpressed (though that's neither here nor there) -- by Saw, I actually had to force myself to stop playing Fallout 3. I am probably a rare case here, but after spending a few hours killing people for fun, I start to find my enjoyment of the game (which was immense) disturbing. I was at once compelled and repulsed, certainly something I would not want kids playing. I've never felt that strongly about a movie.
Game play actually reminded me in a way of the original Zelda. Too bad they are unlikely to make a 3D Zelda along those lines. That's a thematic world I would not mind being absorbed in.
I'm old enough to play any game I want too, except my wife constantly interrupts me to get the laundry, hang the new shades, clean the litter boxes. You have to find that in-between age!
Lol to the people who disagree with being told to enjoy violence, have u seen how bad manhunt is on wii ??? apparently as ive heard it was soo gory that they werent allowed to show the actual footage of u cinematically killing sum1, they were forced to blur it and make it hard to see with red squiggly lines all over the place...ive never played it but apparently it is really twisted :S
