"Evidence has emerged that Warren Spector's Junction Point Studios is working on a game codenamed "Epic Mickey" for the Wii, offering a dark, steampunk-style take on Mickey Mouse and the Magic Kingdom.
Most of the evidence comes from the rumour-hunter's faithful friend - concept artists' websites - and appears to corroborate a Gamasutra report from late last year that first identified the "Epic Mickey" codename."
Right, let's see, the chances that Disney would approve anything like this would seem close to nil, so I can only assume they're hoping to wow someone who well let them warp beloved licensed characters.
Of course I would happily buy a classy steampunk Mickey Mouse game; I'm just sceptical it would ever happen...

This project has been under work three years now, and these concept pieces were already seen by Gamasutra year ago. From what I had heard, Disney had to come into conclusion that it has failed as a company to capitalize its characters to make them appealing for the boys. This is pretty much meant to be "Disney Princess" style superbrand.
Disney licensing Mickey and Goofy for the deranged and depraved? Ridiculous. They have spent literally billions of dollars polishing their image to what it is today. In fact, if this gets a bit more exposure, I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the hammer on the concept art. I don't believe "fair use" would cover mark infringement in pursuit of commercial interest.

Notice that Disney's management was changed in 2006 (same year this project was started), and now creative decisions are controlled by John Lasseter. Lasseter is the genius behind the Pixar, and reason why Disney has stopped doing sequels to its classics, there is no Tempation Island in Disneyland anymore, and Princess and the Frog is being done.

Image is from Kingdom Hearts, Halloween Town.
I think Disney need to renew his characters. Maybe this (like Kingdom Hearts) is one step for captivate hard boys and a more adult public. The new and the artworks are more than a simple rumour.
@Majora: There's a fine line between deranged and dressed up for Halloween. And looking at the concept art, the artists know the difference. You do too, admit it.
HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That scared the crap out of me. There's no way that Disney would do that. I bet it's for Kingdom Hearts 3.
