Got an 85% from ONM which seem to have bagged the first review. 85-89% is their A minus type category (in other words, rough diamond games which aren't QUITE Gold Award status). Sounds like a solid and interesting platformer in most parts. However it does have its occassional issues which to me make it read like "a high seven" out of ten rather than an 85%. It has outstanding visuals and great replay value - but platforming and the whole premise can be bland/average at times too. Mickey is a poor game character they infer, but the OTHER characters play out well in terms of essence and charm. It also has camera issues sometimes as well as paint aiming problems. I PRESUME the negatives are only occassional, hence the highish mark but its clear it isn't in the same league as Zelda and Mario to be frank. I also assume the Zelda comaprison is to do with the action RPG elements (which are mostly join the dots)?
Don't get me wrong, the review makes is sound like a largely solid platformer with a "wonderful setting" and with a nice smidgen of simple RPGism in it - but it appears to be far from "epic".
It's a third-party game that got over an 80%. I'd say that's epic enough. Certainly not the masterpiece Warren Spector hyped it up to be, but epic all the same.
Saw this review earlier. Don't forget that if it's not made by Nintendo themselves, you can all but forget a 90%+ score from ONM. I'll wait for some more reviews to come in, but it seems like a good game based on their review.
Looking at Metacritic, they have given less than 4 pages of 90+'s for third parties out of 30 pages of reviews. If you think that's plenty then fine, but I'm still impressed with Epic Mickey.
Ok, so maybe it's not the most epic of them all, but anyone should be proud of a game with an average of over 80%. I know that if I was a game developer, I'd be proud of making a game that good.
So can someone actually tell me what was in the reviews?
The scores are meaningless.
This is kind of my issue I'm having with the topic. Scores don't really represent anything other than the overall quality of the game that the reviewer believes the game to be. I'm one for details, not for numbers.

Scores don't even represent that. It's a random number that 90% of reviewers assign to a game to either shock people into discussing a game, or get some loving from metacritic/ gamerankings.
I can guarantee that 10% of games journalists, if that, take game scores seriously. They're a necessary evil.

homeboy touched on a few points in the first post. platforming sections are bland/average, Mickey's character lacks the charm of the game's NPCs, some camera issues. I'd love to hear more, as well. Way hyped on this game.

What I was trying to convey is that video game/movie/book/whatever scores are just pointless because they say absolutely nothing about a game. I honestly don't care for what your opinion is on games journalism or if the people involved are followers of the anti-Christ. Oh, and one thing:

What a person "Believes" is a matter of personal opinion. If you didn't completely skip my post, you would've noticed that I honestly don't care for personal opinions. Thank you and good night.

This is the last game I plan on renting for the holidays. Since Nintendo doesn't have demos of retail titles, I typically just pay a little to have the game for a week or so to determine rather or not I go all out and purchase the thing. I've been VERY cautiously optimistic about the game. I want it to be good, but Warren Spector's smug grin and talk of nothing but story makes me nervous. He's the Peter Molyneux of Wii game development.
