that's an interesting comparison considering how both Toy Story and the original Donkey Kong Country were praised for revolutionary computer graphics (and were released within a year of each other).
Nintendo Power gave the game an 8.5 which is a half a point lower then they gave DJ Hero 2. Not sure why, but I guess NP is getting tired of all the 2D platformers.

Weird, it sounded like they were giddy about Donkey Kong Country Returns in last month's issue. Now they gave it a lower score than they did Kirby's Epic Yarn? I feel disappointed.
Not lower. The same score. Epic Yarn got an 8.5 as well. Their standard is surprisingly high for first party games these days, and it's less about the score and more about the actual review anyway. I will agree that they seemed incredibly giddy about it last month though--they were talking it up like it was a 10 or something.

http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=142689 Here's some details on their review. It appears throughout the entire review they compared it to NSMBWii and I guess they like that game more, they also complained about the difficulty. That's kind of a bad reason to give the game a lower score if the game is challenging, unless it is Sonic Colors challenging where the game catches you off guard with a random pitfall, but Game Informer's review never said the game was cheap, which just means the game was too hard for the reviewer. Sad...

Oh and by the way, screw Nintendo Power. I subscribed to them like a month ago and I finally got my first issue today. But it's not the new issue they just put up on their site. It's last month's issue! The one that I got my subscription stub from. So what the heck does this mean? Am I just always going to be a month behind?
I was so looking forward to that DKC: Returns review, too.

I think I see what the NP reviewer is saying though. Sonic Colors is a huge step forward for the franchise, and it's arguably the only truly good 3D Sonic game. So it's kind of a big deal.
Donkey Kong Country Returns looks like an incredibly well-designed game, but it doesn't look like much of an evolution for the series. So I can see why they didn't give it a 9.0
Plus, an 8.5 is a great score!

@Kid_A No. They give you the issue from the month they get your subscription to them, or at least that's what happened to me. I usually don't get their new issues until the last week of the month which kind of ruins the point.

After Nintendo stopped doing Nintendo Power and got some publishing company to do it it just went down hill. I havent touched a new issue in years. Still have all my old ones though.

I was never a HUGE fan of Nintendo Power but I liked it to a point (especially since for a year I didn't have a working computer so I couldn't get decent Nintendo news any other way) but I distinctly remember the bizarre positive yet negative and painful to read Super Mario Galaxy review caused me to not renew the suscription.

Apparently I made the right choice.
The People at Nintendo Power must hate there job if there this Mean to there own Games.

I'm getting this for Christmas. Should I sell DKJB when I get it?
I Have DKJB and have Beaten it. Besides DK64 which I never go into is the only DK adventure game I've played. I planning on playing most of the classics (after my loosly-scheduled classic Zelda binge), but am not presently at liberty to compare. However, compared to platformers in general, DKJB feels like a bit of a departure from the norm (if videogames were normal). And yes the ONLY way to play it is with those awesome Bongos, they're part of what makes the game so unique!
