I'm thinking bout buying Donkey Kong Country Returns cause I can't wait for Tropical Freeze. I haven't got a single issue with shooters, race games, rpg,... but platform games drive me mad. I have a few super mario games (for gameboy colour and SP) but I suck so badly at them that it took me like 12 years to get to the third world (with loads of breaks in between cause I simply couldnt. handle. the. game. anymore.). You get the picture. Is Donkey Kong Country Returns even harder than the average Super Mario game? I watched the IGN review and they said that the difficulty level was insane because you have to jump so accurately. What are the main differences? It looks incredibly fun but it's not when you die every 5 seconds. Anyone else who sucks at platformers? Or maybe people who've become very good at it?

The Donkey Kong Country games are very fun to play. They are also more difficult than the Super Mario 2-D games. Precise jumping and good platform skills are needed. Unlike the Mario games, Donkey Kong has no power-ups in game that give him abilities like throwing fireballs. Donkey and Diddy both have their individual qualities in the way that they control and maneuver. Donkey is powerful and slow. Diddy is fast and agile and his jetpak allows him to fly in the air momentarily. Donkey Kong Country is a fantastic game, but if your not good at easy platformers then this game may prove to be too much for you.... expect to die frequently until you get the patterns down. With that being said, I'd still recommend the game but not if you're gonna get angry really quick and give up on the game. Practice makes perfect!!! :)

I am a big platforming fan. That being said, it took me a long time to get through DKCR and I never even got to the secret world. It's one of the most challenging platformer a I've played. I don't want to scare you from it, just being honest. It's really fun but the difficulty is turned pretty high, much higher than the original DKC trilogy

Big landslide.

Also, if you have a 3ds I'd suggest that version, as it has the original difficulty mode, and easy mode.

Ow hmz.. not sure if I should buy it, cause I already suck at super mario (even at mario land 2, 6 coins lol) ... Do you guys think it's something I can get better at if I play it more often? I've grown up with shooters, rpgs and adventures, that's why I'm good at them. Never had that experience with platform games.

All games are something you can get better at if you keep playing. And hey, there is a super guide to use as a backup if you can't handle a particularly bad level (as well as the special items from the 3DS version).

Would I recommend buying it? Hard to say. It's a great game though, so you'll definitely miss out if you don't play it.

If you suck at Super Mario Land 2, a very easy platformer, then DKC Returns will be too much for you. If they drive you "mad", as you say, then DKC Returns will send you to the insane asylum.

However, if you enjoy platformers (and it seems like you don't), then this is one of the best of that genre.

I suck at platformers, too ;)

Unless it's something like Infamous with carefree room for error. Playing all 3 GB Super Mario Lands, I died alot. Though, some of that is due to my greed...

The proposal: beat a Kirby game, becoming adept, then advancing to harder fare...
Akin to: juggling with 2 balls, feeling comfortable, then grasping 3 chainsaws.

Your point is still taken and seems like the best way to acquire a taste for the genre, at least.

Miyamoto on his desire to focus more on the (hard)core Nintendo fan.

[The casual] attitude is, ‘okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.’ [...] and to me it’s kind of a pathetic thing.

I'm a big fan of platformers, it's probably my favourite genre. One of my first games that I played was Super Mario Land 1 and I really sucked at it xD
.But over the years I've played more and more platformers and I got better at them over time. I have DKCR on the Wii and 3DS (because I love the game so much) I beat the Wii version but never got over 100% complete. Now on the 3DS version, I've learned to myself to be more patient and do more practice and I now have 192% complete (yes, you can get 200% in this game :P) and I only used a couple of the new items on the 3ds version to beat the hard temple stages.
And don't worry, I actually sucked at kirby games for a while too and also at Mario Land 2 XD

I don't think there's a big, or any, difference in difficulty if you don't complete a lot - getting all the letters and everything is extremely difficult but if you don't aim for completion, and you memorize the levels with the minecart, then I think the difficulty is pretty similar, and manageable. And with one or two very tricky levels you can use the superguide.

I ordered donkey kong country for SNES :D especially because it's just so retro and the music is... incredible. Really looking forward to this one, I hope it'll work out. I started playing SSBB (wii) again and I don't have any problem with that but then again it's not really a platformer I guess and it's rather easy :P

I've been playing donkey kong country for a couple of hours now. Mine Cart Carnage put me through hell but man this game is fan-tas-tic :D can't wait for tropical freeze. And DK country is somewhat easier for me than super mario.

Huh. Most would disagree but I guess that makes you lucky that you don't have to miss out on one of the best 2d platformers because of it being too difficult.
