I was reading about Tatsunoko vs Capcom and read this post by a pirate:
"You know what's great about T v. C? It's one of like six Wii games I can justify burning to a 50 cent blank DVD and playing on my Wii. No longer will I be restricted to SNES ROMs to get use out of this albino novelty device!"
And then he continues:
"No Wii game is worth $50. I'm a university student. I'd die if I wasn't able to spot rip-offs, and the gaming industry is horrible for ripping people off. Think about it: I can buy DVD's for, what, $5 each? Assuming those movies last 2 hours each, that's 28 hours of grade-A entertainment for the cost of a new game ($70 in Canada). Games rarely have 10 hours of gameplay in them these days. Technically, games aren't worth any more than $30-ish to the savvy consumer - if you're willing to spend $70 on a blank disc with copied data on it, you're throwing your money away. Games need to be cheaper, and they need to be better - this should be the developer's onus for making the gamer pay more money for less game."
Some games are too expensive. In no way does that justify theft.
If anyone really thinks it does, they are welcome to represent themselves in court, and then log on to these forums to tell us how that defense went over with the judge.
In some countries games are insanely expensive, but yeah; either you can afford things or you can't. In no way is anyone entitled to videogames--people can charge whatever they want to charge. You feeling you're entitled to it at a lower price doesn't justify you acquiring it for free. You can't go to a restaurant, eat food, and just walk out because you don't like the menu prices.

I hate people who say stuff like this. I'm a uni student too. I'm also by no means rich. Far from it. Yet I still have never had any reason to pirate video games. Or anything else, for that matter. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it, or otherwise attempt to obtain it. Simple as. The only thing he's doing is compounding the notion that all uni students are lazy thieving society-sponges.
...OK, rant over.

Games are NOT expensive. People just need to be smarter shoppers.
$50 for a game is expensive, they can't be smart shoppers, there is no way around that. $30 is reasonable. It does not make piracy right, but he makes a good point.
The Game.
Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.
The game industry does NOT rip people off. There are plenty of Wii games out there worth the $50. And then there's the awesome stuff we get on Wii and DSi Shop; they have some great games that are practically steals! The most expensive games on all of Nintendo's online download services are only $15!

So does everyone in this thread never pirate anything? I don't pirate games but I pirate music and films on a daily basis. I don't think I know anyone under the age of 30 who doesn't have something pirated

You probably shouldn't say that on the internet. You could get fined like a million dollars.

I was speaking in character to better present my point, of course I would never really pirate anything

Whether OTHER people pirate or not is no justification for engaging in piracy yourself. No more than breaking into a shop to steal the things you want is "less illegal" because you know loads of people who have done it before you.
Everyone has to account for his or her self. Can you justify it in your heart? If so, good for you; it's still illegal, and that's the issue. Pointing at others and saying, "But they do it too-ooooo..." is not a productive way of addressing the problem.
I used to pirate like mad...I dunno the last couple years I've just kind of gone legit. I don't have the time to watch movies like I did back when I pirated them often and the only real game "piracy" I ever did was emulation of still-alive systems (GBA back in the day for a little while, PSP when I first got it) but yeah I dunno being in the industry makes you appreciate the work that goes into these things. And movie piracy....well I just don't do it anymore. Not gonna soapbox too much; do what you want, just don't try to justify it. You know it's wrong/illegal.

I didn't mean that I do it because everyone else does, I meant that given how widespread piracy is I find it hard to believe that everyone in this thread is squeaky clean
I pirate music and films quite a bit and I'm not afraid to say it. I may differ from some though as I use it more to 'demo' an album or film. In this day and age where we are bombarded by so much media day in day out, there is no way I could afford to buy everything that I have a mild intrest in. If it's good then I'll buy it legit, if it's dross then sorry but you don't deserve my money. Strangely though I have never pirated games. I think this is to do with the fact that if I don't like a game I can trade/sell it at little to no finacial loss plus it is easier IMO to know when you will like a game based on reviews/previews than it is with music or films and a lot less of them are made in comparison.
