Topic: Cancelled Game: Super Mario Spikers

At one point, Next Level Games thought about making a part-volleyball, part-wrestling game for Wii called Super Mario Spikers inspired by their Mario Strikers series. Development never really started and it was quickly canned. Nintendo declined Next Level's pitch because certain parts of it violated the company's code of honor. "It was a Japanese honor thing," said a trusted source who was closely involved with the game.

I always suspected it, but I'm glad to see Nintendo finally confirmed it....

Next Level Games has no budo.

Wonder what that "Japanese honour thing" was. Maybe something similar to how they decided against putting Peach in Punch-Out!! for Wii due to them disliking the idea of hitting women in the game?

Nothing wrong with punching Peach in smash bros though.
That Japanese honor thing is a peculiar response though. I wonder what they meant with it.

Well, Peach isn't the only female character in Smash, and in Smash the whole point is to fight other Nintendo characters with other Nintendo characters, so whether they're male or female isn't really important as they're all going to be fighting.

In Punch-Out!! you're a guy fighting other guys. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's how it is in actual boxing; men fight men, women fight women. And that's also how it is in the game. It'd be a bit out of place to have a female in there among a bunch of male boxers, right? Especially since in Punch-Out!! you're always fighting other men. Why would they throw a woman in there? I don't think there's a good reason to do that. That's not really a positive move, in terms of design and the nature of the game/sport. I mean, in Wii Sports you can have a male vs female...but it's not out of place, not like putting a woman in a Punch-Out!! game would be. Unless in Punch-Out!! they make you play as a woman, against other women, but eh, that's straying a bit from my point.

You mean an ape isn't out of place? DK anyone?
It's not as if she wouldn't be punching back. Being punchout she'd be giving more than she'd be getting.
