It's not that puzzling, as video games are primarily a visual medium, and so having a visual notification pop up over the gaming area itself is certainly not going to appeal to everybody. No more than a DJ deciding to give traffic updates in the middle of a song you were enjoying is going to appeal to every listener.

The ability to shut them off is a welcome one, and that would be the way to please people on both sides of the debate, but "I don't see how this could possibly bother anybody!" is a little silly. It bothers them because they're trying to focus on one thing, and an unwelcome visual intrusion is asking them to focus on another.

I completely agree. How annoying would it be to be playing Super Mario Galaxy, then all of a sudden, you have popups like "You jumped 10 times" or "You spent 1:00 in the air". It takes you out of the experience of the game itself. And like I said before, if it was something like "You beat 10 challenge worlds" then an even more challenging world appeared, THAT wouldnt take you out of the game (At least not as bad as just an achievement).

I think that Achievments can take away from the focus of the game, which is having fun. Instead, you're trying to do the stupidest things just so you can get that Trophy or get those points. Yes, I'm glad.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can get worked up about "achievememnts" on either side of this argument.

They don't add much to a game, but they don't really detract anything from it either.

.... or something like that.

Because people have nothing better to do?

To each their own but I like achievements. There are good things they can do also. Say you're stuck at a part in a game and you see your friend has an achievement for that. You know they can do it, so you ask them for a tip. I don't use them for bragging rights or anything, but they are also good if you are bored and want to just mess around doing stupid stuff in a game- it gives you some ideas on what to try out.

Let's be fair here, is it any worse than the Super Guides on the Wii that play a level for you if you can't do it?

I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.

If one finds it fun to unlock every achievement in a game, why should that matter to you? One person may think it fun to cheat and unlock everything, beating the game without trying, while another may enjoy playing through the game blindfolded on super hard difficulty using a dance revolution pad. Fun is relative to the person in question, so... Why argue?

Next you'll be whining at someone for not liking a specific genre, it's just pointless. To each his own, said a certain boy of the stars.

So True.....

Achievements are not Bad but, they are not what makes the game.

I know people who will buy a game like Hannah Montana just because it's easy to platinum..

I see people on My X-box Friend list who have done that.

Now I wonder why there on my Friend list....

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Hmm, well that might be true. We gamers tend to argue over the stupidest crap.

.... or something like that.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind having them on Wii, but obviously some ppl would need the option to turn them off for some reason.

Or just ignore them like most people who don't want them should? It's just a number guys. Calm down.

Just for you.

I like them if utilized well. Three basic ideas of that comes to mind.

They unlock content, or act as credits to unlock content. (Prime Trilogy)
They challenge your skill, rather than your patience (WS:R)
They give you hints at parts of the game you may not experience or find otherwise (FFCC: Crystal Bearer)

They're not called Achievements.

They're called CHEEVOS!

/me gets shot in the head for using the most idiotic-sounding shortened-to-try-to-make-it-sound-cool term that ever had the misfortune of falling out of some doritos-and-mountain-dew-soaked-nerd's mouth.

Seriously. Don't say Cheevos or I'll hunt you down and pummel you with a manhole cover.
