@OP
This thread is pointless...

If you have the Wii and consider yourself a hardcore gamer, then you have plenty of options... Go for those games (Madworld, House of the Dead, The Conduit, The Godfather, SSBB, No More Heroes, Red Steel 1/2, and the list just goes on...)

And if you don't like the myriad of "hardcore" games already availible (with many more like Metroid Other M on the way), trade in your Wii and buy a 360 (have fun with your RROD) or a PS3 (and pay out the ass for Blu-Ray).

Please let's focus on the post and not the poster, people (and the OP can help by not responding to personal attacks -- just notify the mods!). I'd like to avoid having to edit half the posts in the thread if possible!

I don't think there's a "movement" as such. Some folk feel that the Wii needs to have some of the same games as the other two consoles of this generation to be taken seriously by the mainstream gaming press. Personally I don't think that's the case. I do like certain kinds of games which have less representation on the Wii than other platforms, but I don't feel I've been "stiffed" by not having floods of action games on the Wii. I don't have inifinite financial resources so as long as there's a few fun ones to play, I'm happy.

As with many things in life it's a matter of enjoying what you have. Having had a Jaguar during the dawn of the Playstation era, I know what it's like to have a system with very few quality games; the Wii doesn't have that problem.

Thanks Sean Aron, I will do that.

Also - I am not saying there are no quality games on Wii, mature or no, just that by and large people seemed to have latch on to 'saviour' games, set up by 'pro' game sites that hype the heck out of them for half a year or better, and then they get mediocre or poor reviews when they release, often for good reason.

My other side point is that while some of these game may not be terrble - it feels like 'edgy' content - exp the swearing in HOTDead - was just stapled on to give the game credibility. But to me, it loses credibility big time.

The point is I DO like the Wii, and am happy with what it does. I do not look at gaming as a giant melting pot where everything looks the same, I like consoles to have perosnality and try to do their own thang.

IGN: The holiday Wii lineup looks thin for the hardcore crowd. We see this. Gamers see this. What, if anything, is Nintendo planning to address it?

Oh good, I am neither a gamer or hardcore. Saves me from having to be IGNorant.

This concept of the "hardcore savior" game that the press has dreamed up is just silly. The games that get an M rating on Wii are the most immature titles on the console, for the most part. The gratuitous swearing of No More Heroes or Mad World is not in any way broadening its appeal but only limiting its possible audience to the 18+ mostly male crowd.

If a game like Fallout 3 was made on Wii, where the Mature rating is a natural result of the game's purpose (in other words, not getting the M rating would be to dumb it down), I'd welcome that. But the "Mature" titles out there now seem to be the result of game designers saying, "Hmm... How can we make a game with an M rating? I know! Let's make everyone talk like middle school kids at recess."

I think someone said Other M earlier, but Reggie already said it won't be rated M.

Why does the term hardcore and casual exists? Before the Wii was launched, these terms did not even exist. Nintendo has been catering to the hardcore recently, by annoucing all those games at E3 2009.

"Hardcore" has been used to describe games for a long time, though its definition has always been in flux. "Casual" is the new one -- or at least the only one I hadn't heard in reference to gaming prior to the DS.

Hardcore...casual...they're both stupid, ridiculous labels that personally, and self respecting gamer wouldn't use. First, the people we call casual gamers, would never call themselves gamers, period. They're not gamers, they'll tell you as much.

As for hardcore gamers...boy oh boy, how pretenious is that label...plus, look at the games that most hardcore gamers play...FPS's or the GTA's and rarely do they stray from that. Don't believe me, look at the 360's library which is usually regarded as the 'hardcore gaming system'. I mean, Fallout 3 is a great game but for the love of all that is holy, it is a FPS disguised as a RPG! Disregarding Fallout 3, most of these games have a wide appeal, shallow gameplay, and focus on the online multiplayer...HOW MUCH MORE CASUAL CAN YOU GET! I would love for anyone to tell me how COD is a 'hardcore' franchise witht the shallow gameplay, lack of any credible solo game (it stinks), or the few hours of offline play you can get...it's the new Space Invaders...

If I was forced at gunpoint to use the term 'hardcore gamer', to me, it's someone that plays everything and doesn't write something off, for the most part...they can as easily jump from Galaxy to Fable to Pokemon (of course personal taste isn't accounted for here) and enjoy themselves while doing it. They won't kick and scream in calling the Wii a kiddy system because they have a clear understanding of what Nintendo is all about, but at the same time, they won't backflip because of console sales that favor their 'system'.

Well, I guess in the end, I created a new label as just a 'gamer' and that, if having to use a label, is a label I hold in a lot higher regard than casual or hardcore because I see both labels as destructive to the gaming community where a gamer just wants to see where every company goes and how great the industry is and can be.

Adam has a good point. Most of the "mature" games on Wii are made to intentionally receive a mature rating, instead of simply receiving one as a result of the game's content. As a result, most of the M-rated games on Wii are over-the-top-PS3-game-wannabes that fail utterly.

The fact stands that M-rated games don't sell well on Wii. Sega got it right with The Conduit: it has a T rating, and its projected sales for the first week (according to IGN) was around 100,000 units. Sure, it's not the most original FPS out there, but it's the first decent one of its kind on Wii. You can expect more like it in the future.

I agree with everyone else, I'm sick to death of the hardcore/casual terms.

Completely disagree! Can't judge that until the end of the life-cycle anyway. And stop being weird, seriously, self loathing?!?! Huh?!

I must say that this topic has the weirdest name of any topic I read on Nintendo Life.

Not the only questions. There're always the classics such as, Who am I? Where did I come from? and What's for supper, mom?

"Hardcore" is a term gamers use to make themselves seem like gaming masters, it's like they are trying to prove themselves in the gaming community. Personally, I think it's ridiculous. I have been playing games constantly for a good 20-something years and I love the feeling of mastering a game and dominating in multiplayer, but in no way do I consider myself a "hardcore" gamer. I'm just a gamer who enjoys a quality game. As for "hardcore" games, I don't see why if a game gets an M rating people say "ooooohh, that game is hardcore". In my opinion Super Mario Galaxy is more of a hardcore game than Mad World, I mean it was more challenging and it took me longer to complete Galaxy than it did to complete Gears of War on hardcore difficulty (which to some is considered the most hardcore of the hardcore). So in MY opinion "hardcore" is a meaningless term gamers throw around to make themselves feel important.

I'd love to, Waltzy, but it depends on the definition du jour of "hardcore."

If I had to guess though, it'd be that the items like blue shells and lightning bolts occur in greater frequency for the last place racer, which greatly decreases the odds of winning on skill alone.

I was under the impression that the definition used in the original post was "hardcore" as "pseudo-mature" (given the examples), in which case Mario Kart requires no explanation.

All of the common definitions for the word are already covered by less confusing and controversial words, though, so I won't pretend to defend either. Those are just the reasons I think someone who cares about the word would say Mario Kart is not "hardcore."

The way I play Mario Kart is H-core, where as for others, that will not be the case. It appeals to both sides of this 'divide', which is why it sold so well, and continues to. I'm looking forward to Nintendo making games harder, whilst including the 'cop-out' function for the newbs/grannies/skids. I just hope you can completely disable it so I'm not tempted.

@39: Nah, Hardcore Mario Kart is where you drive up to a competitor's kart, jump into it, beat him/her to death with the blue shell and throw their corpse out the back under oncoming traffic. Then you watch the ensuing mayhem as karts flip over (crushing their occupants) whilst trying to avoid the bloodied corpse. Finnaly, you strap 2 pounds of C4 to your (well used) blue shell before launching it to permanently remove anyone who's left that's just overtaken you. Swearing and pre-school quips are optional.

Back on topic, I agree that most of the Wii's 'mature' games have been poorly accepted but on the flip-side I've never wanted to buy a 360/PS3 to play any mature (sorry, "hardcore") games on those systems either. I suppose my lack of desire to watch people die horrible deaths or torture/rape/force drugs on people (even if they are NPCs) in games makes me socially retarded by todays standards. Not that I'd give a shit even if you told me to my face.
