Topic: A Serious Firmware 4.0 Issue... Anyone Else?

So I've had my Wii for over a year... Played 30 titles (on-disc)... Played 100's of VC/WW games (No homebrew)... Even had to send my Wii in to Nintendo once because of a worn-out disc reader (stopped spinning). I've had the random freeze every few months playing RB2 or GHWT, but aside from that I've never had serious firmware issues... Until NOW!

So far, it's happened 3 times... But in booting the Disc Channel or SD Menu, the Wii goes to a black/white error screen saying... "The Wii System Files Are Corrupt. Please Refer to the Operations Manual for Troubleshooting."

I instantly powered off my Wii and unplugged it when this first happened and called NOA... And they started telling me to do what I had already done. After plugging it back in, no issue... Until about a month later, two days in a row. Now it's been fine all week... All my saves, Channels, and everything are fine (I went through the extremely tedious task of checking). But it's really concerning.

Also noticing that on occasion, when coming back to the Wii Menu from the SD Menu, the disc won't appear in the disc channel. I have to pop it out/in to get it to read again. I looked up some boards on the Ninty USA site, and it seems to be a pretty common occurence.

Anyone else having odd firmware issues?

That sounds like bad luck. Try and blow some dust out of your drive (or stick something in there and clean around, although that's not recommended), and make sure that all your discs are clean. Otherwise, I wouldn't say it's an issue with the firmware update, just your Wii in general. Contact NoA, explain EVERYTHING and see what they say.

I have not had any issue with the firmware. I have noticed however, that, oddly, wiiware/vc saved on SD card do not appear as a game to recommend on the nintendo channel, no matter how long u play it.

Objection

As Wiiloveit said, this seems to be a problem with the physical components of your machine over the data portions. (Please don't point out that they have to work in harmony i know that). Do as Wiiloveit said; you may need to send your Wii in again.

Every so often I get a disc that won't read (no scratches or anything, it just doesn't show up on the disc menu) and sometimes I'll need to power down and reboot completely, but I don't think it's a firmware issue. At least, not in my case...

This sort of thing has happened now and again on most of my consoles, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

as far as your disc drive goes nintendo sells cleaners. Go to best buy and see if you can get it. It should run you about $9.

I've never had that problem. In case you weren't aware, however, it may be worth noting that most recent (as in sometime in the past year or so) VC releases aren't on the Nintendo Channel AT ALL. The last few times they bothered were for new systems added to VC (VC Arcade, Commodore 64, and maybe Sega Master System; not sure about that last one) and SMRPG (but not Clu Clu Land, which released the same day...go figure). So if you're expecting Super Punch-Out to be recommendable, for example, it'll never happen. WiiWare does tend to be updated regularly, though (I won't bother posting my conspiracy theory about this right now; I think it's fairly obvious anyway), so if you've played a recent release for over an hour (for example, Cocoto Platform Jumper, which I've already posted the Nintendo Channel recommendation for after playing it from SD), that would seem to indicate a different problem.

I haven't had any problems with firmware 4.0, personally. It concerns me that so many problems seem to be popping up lately, though. I wonder what's up..?

My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P

The only problem i've had was a month or so ago when i put in AC:CF it said it was corrupted, so unplugged the wii and tried again and it's fine then recently when ever i put brawl in i have to keep putting in and out for the wii to read it.

Last night I exited Galaga 90 to the Wii Menu then opened the SD Menu. It kept saying Loading for a couple minutes, so I exited to Wii Menu and clicked SD again. This time, in the black box where it should say Loading was just a bunch of black and white pixel garbage and the system froze. Very frightening. Reset and it worked fine, though there was a slight pause before opening the SD when the screen was just black. Hopefully my games are safe because I don't feel like downloading 7 pages full of games again.

Come on, friends,
To the bear arcades again.

I've been getting this message about once a day for the past week. The first time was when loading the SD Card Menu - it "loaded" for about a minute, then the system file corruption message popped up. I've also seen it after hitting "A" at the health and safety warning screen upon powering up the Wii.

Never saw it before 4.0.

I gave Nintendo a call, and they said the best option was to do a format (which I said no to since I can't copy certain save data - AC:CF, Brawl). They also told me that if I ended up sending it, that is pretty much what they would do, and that they wouldn't be able to save the files that can't be copied to the SD card either.

Ah well, I'll just tough it out.

I rule when it comes to games. So deal with it.
