They have absolutely, positively NO choice lol. This E3 is Nintendo's last chance in hell to make the Wii U matter, and the only way to do that is to show GAMES. They really have to show or at least talk about the next Zelda, They really have to show at least two new unannounced games, they have to drop release dates on X and Bayonetta, They have to show Yarn Yoshi. They have to show whatever they have, because if they don't, they will convince all but the most deluded Nintendo fans that they have totally given up. if that happens, Nintendo will be out of console gaming essentially for YEARS, because no one will make games at all for a lame-duck Wii U, nor for a new, middle of the generation machine after most gamers have bought a ps4 or xb1. This E3 is a big deal for Nintendo. It's all been so odd, considering what a wonderful machine the Wii U is. Has any company EVER shot themselves in the foot this severely?

I agree they need to show alot. As there are currently 2 games worth buying confirmed between now and Christmas.
And not doing so will hurt them BUT they have the cash, experience and manpower to ride out a "failed" generation console.
I say all this in a hushed voice as I LOVE my wii u.
Its the best thing I have bought in ages. And Nintendo at the end of the day are awesome.
But its currently been outsold by the dreamcast !
(Which again I did buy and enjoy)

I do agree that this year's E3 will be very important for Nintendo. As a Wii U owner, I love the machine and the games we've got so far, but can't stop feeling like the wait between Nintendo big titles and the absence of 3rd party games to fill those gaps it's really killing this wonderful system. So, I think they are holding their hand till E3, and try to make a positive impact there. Zelda will be there, it's one of Nintendo's games that has an impact on the whole gamer world. Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8 is coming, and that out to give Wii U a shroomy boost in sales.

Not trying to call you out specifically, but I notice a lot of people keep saying things similar to this:
"they have the cash, experience and manpower to ride out a 'failed' generation."

I'm not concerned with their financial standings or experience though, I'm more concerned with what will happen to Nintendo's reputation if we do end up having to collectively ride out a failed generation with the Wii U. They are not seeing the sales now, after coming off the heels of a very successful console, how do you think people's opinion will change after Nintendo has another big failure on the books?

This isn't exactly a mirror-like comparison but I remember people were very hesitant to buy a Dreamcast, even though it was a fantastic system, due to Sega's recent failure with the Saturn.

Zelda will be the highlight of E3 for me.
I'm not as anxious as others about this game though. I really want to play the next installment in the series, but I hope they take their time and do not rush it. I would not mind at all if this game has a 2015 release date.

I think it's gonna have the Twilight Princess art style again. The new smash bros has both Link and Zelda in their Twilight Princess styles and the smash games are usually up to date with character designs.

Nintendo's internal studios normaly don't really know what they are all working on, especially small details like the look of the main characters. Combine that with Sakurai beeing independent and not beeing hired by Nintendo and you'll know that they just used the design that fits the overall game best.

That's easy. Drop the "Wii" branding and come up with something new.

That didn't help Sega when they changed from Saturn to Dreamcast or Blackberry when they renamed phones.

It's the name at the top, 'Nintendo', that will be harmed, not the name of the individual console.

I doubt they'll plan a release for 2014 with Zelda U, they sure don't want to draw the attention away from Super Smash Bros. Late 2015 seems a little.. too late? Spring 2015 is quite reasonable, but they'll be missing out on the december sales this way. On the other hand, Mario Kart 8 won't be released around the holidays either, and that's an even bigger game. So, spring 2015 will be my guess.

I highly doubt it, considering Sakurai doesn't really use recent character models from other games

The difference between those games and zelda u is, that they have been out for some time, so he has access to those character models and rigs.

Sega put "Sega" in big bold letters on both the Saturn and Dreamcast. Nintendo has not put "Nintendo" in big bold letters on the front of the Wii or Wii U. It just says "Wii" and "Wii U." I'm pretty sure when most people think of Nintendo, they think of the NES, Super Nintendo or Nintendo 64. I've met non-gamers who don't even know that gamecube, wii or wii u are even Nintendo consoles. I think it will be easier for them to separate themselves from it. Plus, Nintendo still has a good reputation as far as games go, unlike SEGA, so they're really in a different situation than SEGA was.

Also, I know nothing about the blackberry situation nor do I care enough to research it. I care so little about phones.

The GameCube is prominently branded as "Nintendo GameCube", both on the controller, the games and the console itself, everyone knows it's a Nintendo console, but I do agree that with the Wii and Wii U, Nintendo choose to stray afar from the Nintendo name a bit. It's not Nintendo Wii, it's just the Wii.
Point is, they can drop the Wii brand with their next console and focus again on being "Nintendo something". Besides, some people might argue that there is a certain amount of negativity towards the Wii brand, but the Nintendo brand is still viewed with good eyes.

I just assume they used those because they are the most realistic/proportional representations of the characters, not necessarily because they will be used in the next game

Well they could have used the Skyward Sword models or reused the Ocarina of Time Models from Melee. I just find it odd that they would use those designs again when in the past Smash games they used the most recent designs.
