I think this is probably going to happen long before we see a proper 3D Zelda game. The reason being that Nintendo is basing a lot of it's Wii U Mario games on the engines of 3DS Mario games that came before, and so the same technique could be used to make a game on the Wii U based on a modified version of the Link Between Worlds engine to create a game much more quickly and cheaply. Following the Mario trend, I'd also predict that this game is going to support local 4 player co-op, most likely as a Four Swords sort of thing.

But what if it was a 4 player co-op Zelda game with a top-down perspective, but didn't just have multicolored Links, but instead 4 unique characters. Who would be the other 3? Thoughts?

it would be 5 Swords!
including Linebeck, Sheik, Groose, Goron and Zora as playable characters!(though the three first I mentioned would be problematic because of the timeline thing....)

Honestly, I can see Zelda, Shiek, and Midna being good candidates. I can also see Saria, Ruto, Impa, Skull Kid, and Fi. Unfortunately, this idea probably wouldn't come to fruition specifically because Tingle would be a playable character...

if tingle was a playable character there'd be also the Happy Mask guy, Postman and chicken as playable characters

It could be Four Swords with 5 players. Four Links try to progress through the dungeon, while the evil Vaati will play on the GamePad and messing around with them. I liked Vaati as a vilain.

If that happens I'll probably throw my GamePad into a wall.

I like @Samurai_Goroh's idea Vaati was my favorite Zelda Villain!

If there was a Four Swords type game on Wii U (which i hope there will be) I don't think it would be top down...

First of all, if it's a Four Swords game, then the four playable characters would be Link, as the series is based on the "Four Sword" which has the ability to turn Link into four Links.

Secondly, the only way I could see a Four Sword game being made for the Wii U is if it were like Nintendo Land where it's a splitscreen game using motion plus controllers, or if it's an overhead game with the player using the wii remote sideways. I don't think Nintendo is going to try to get people to connect four 3DS' to a Wii U. Unless you're a kid with a bunch of friends, it's kind of hard to get three other people who have a 3DS together that wants to play one game. Also, with the 3DS and Wii U connected, that would make three screens that players would have to look at it, which seems a bit excessive.

Maybe, though, it could work in a similar way to Four Sword Adventure on the gamecube and it be an online game only. So each player would see the same thing on the tv, but if they went into a house or cave then it would be displayed on the gamepad.
