Nintendo don't need to keep the Wii brand. The reason for this is that Nintendo have a strong gaming brand as is, unlike Sony and Microsoft, so a console called "Nintendo ..." would have near instant recognition, whereas a console called "Sony ..." would not.
But I agree with the calls for a new console design. As someone who has no problem with the notion of "Nintendo the toy maker", the SNES and N64 were brilliant designs, and a similar one would be a breath of fresh air. Go on, Nintendo, try something different!
I go by Lin1876 everywhere in games, so keep an eye out for me!

That's why Sony created the brand "PlayStation", which has existed for over 15 years, so I'd think it would be recognizable by now. Even the name "Sony" itself is known all over the world as a quality brand.

It makes sense from a business point of view to keep the Wii name alive. If they remove the Wii name all the casual gamers (of all ages) who Nintendo won over by the family friendly Wii will potentially be lost, accompanied by a loss of revenue. I say pick a brand name and stick with it and build on it from there. That is where I agree with what Sony did with the Playstation brand. However, where Sony missed out, was that the playstation was seen as a console for hardcore gamers only. Now if Nintendo's next console can make a name for itself among casual and hardcore gamers, without loosing the ground they have already won, their sales will be off the charts. This will bring in more revenue for Nintendo to develop more quality games for us.
@50. i agree with you. Wii 2 does sound... eye catching. But, "Wii Dream" is an amazing name, as soon as you see it you brain automatically makes us think: "We Dream together" and well... it's just that little bit better in my opinion...
Why not just call it the Nintendo U? It keeps the new part of their branding, while doing away with the 'Wii' part which could cause any confusion. Simple!
Honestly I can't undersatd the whole rebranding thing. Essentially, it's kind a Wii upgrade anyway, right; Sure it has the drawpad as its new controller, but it can still make use of Wii games and accessories. What other name could they possibly give it? So far any name suggested here really doesn't feel quite right imo, while I have no suggestion, myself. But consider how they've already incoperated Miis into both Wii and 3DS.....A particularly supportive title(s) could be named something along the lines of "U and Mii". Why take a chance upon an unnecessary rebranding and take away from such possibillities?

From a marketing stand-point, I think they'll want to keep the name simple like they did with Wii. That is supported by their initial name of Wii U. Nintendo hasn't had a console or handheld with a name that is more than 3 letters/numbers since 2006, and I don't think they are going back.
Personally, I like Nintendo Revolution. It's simple, not as simple as Wii, but simple enough. It gets the message across. It's the best proposition I've heard. I don't think Nintendo will use it, but it is better than Wii U imho.
It shouldn't be Wii anything because there already is a Wii.
That's like saying Sony shouldn't have kept the name PlayStation, since there was already a PlayStation 1.
PlayStation is a "brand" that's synonymous with Sony consoles, like how Game Boy (and now DS) are synonymous with Nintendo handhelds.
Yeah, PlayStation is synonymous with its consoles, Portable(s), now Vita. GameBoy is synonymous with its handhelds, and now so is DS. Though in a way he does make a point because really; Not a single console has ever repeated the same name before, with the exceptions of Entertainment System and Super NES which differ from Wii and Wii U as there were no options for backwards compability during their time. My guess is nobody really knew who they were at the time so who knows what the reason was for keeping the name the same.
They should really call it something cool, like the Omega Sandwich Re:generator Double Plus Core Xtended.
And it should really have a pizza cooker.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
