@2Sang How do you define groundbreaking? To me, that means a new mechanic that that's vital to the way the game is played. I'd argue ZombiU, Nintendoland (regretably), and Game & Wario are pretty good examples right there of "groundbreaking" Touchpad features. Which is pretty good, considering as far as I could tell, there weren't more than 5 or 6 Wii games with "groundbreaking" motion controls in its entire lifetime.

He doesn't even own a Wii U. I don't know how his arguments are relevant...

IMO, If you have to actually have to play the game in order to understand that something is actually different, it's unique mechanics are too subtle to be groundbreaking.

But then again, this is why I'm asking for 2Sang's definition, so I can understand where he's going with this.

Wii U is one of those things you have to try to get a good idea of what it is

Wii U is better than the PS4 now, but if you want a console now, PS3, 360, 3DS and Vita are better choices, if you want a console not for now but for the future, the PS4 clearly seems to have more of a future ahead than the Wii U

It really depends. I just looked at it as a console version of the DS, that still accepted Wii remotes. I think people are more so against trying it, or won't even entertain the idea that they play partially or completely on a touch screen.

The PS4 has a touch pad, and I would personally put that well below a full out touch screen.

There isn't a future, without a present

Haha, reasons like this are why I love the Paper Mario series. And your analogy is totally true. About the Wii U in general...if you're interested at all, now is the time. You get a FREE game with MK8, FREE!!!!1 Of course, not everyone likes MK, but I still think it's the best all-around racer out there. Even games like Forza and Gran Turismo--which both look amazing--can't touch the flat-out fun gameplay of Mario Kart.

I don't think anyone here will try to argue that the Wii U is more powerful than either the PS4 or XB1. However...it's not about the hardware, it's about the games.

My PC (and this is true for many people, I'm not a special snowflake) will destroy the best the PS4 and XB1 have to offer in terms of graphical capabilities. So for me, it's a no brainer. I have a great PC for multi-platform titles, and my Wii U is perfect for picking up the other games I want to play. There's the obvious titles like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, but as I was seeing titles many of the other titles that I wanted were also Nintendo exclusive - ZombiU and Wonderful101 chief among those.

And this is what I think the major failing of the Wii U situation is, on the shoulders of consumers, Nintendo, and developers alike. Yes, the gamepad's potential hasn't been realized. And yes, the PS4 and XB1 are noticeably more powerful. But all of that wouldn't matter if the U's game library wasn't starving for more titles. It has plenty of wonderful games, but there simply aren't enough of them. The list of games coming down the pipeline for the U is downright anemic compared to its competition, and if you only only include retail games (not VC or eShop only titles), that list goes from anemic to flatlining.

@Dreamz people keep saying that about PC but I don't know...... I mean my 4 years old PC is much more powerful than my PS3 but every game runs much better on my PS3 than it does on my PC.... (Say Arkham City or Fifa)....... PC games seems only to be marketed toward the high end consumer who upgrades their PC every 2 years....... Yah your PC may be more powerful than a PS4 or Xbone now, but I'm pretty sure a game high end game released in 2017 is going to run better on PS4 or Xbone than it will on your PC if you have not upgraded it..... it would probably even run better on the Wii U if the game were to be released at all for it...... that's why I like consoles you buy them and you know games would run on it for the lifetime of the console (and if the games don't run are buggy ect at least you can find out beforehand unlike PC where its harder because everything depends on your configuration)

@Unca_Lz because if you don't play a console for hundreds of hours, you have no idea if it's amazing or horrible quality. Just like if you don't put a hundred thousand miles riding a Porsche, you can't tell if it's a nicer car.

@2Sang What makes the snes innovative? Mode 7 wasn't that big an innovation, and whats left after that. Shoulder buttons? What sold all those systems (though the wii's advantage was innovation) was great games! Games sell systems, or at least they used to. Now people care too much about brand loyalty and specs, and that nasty mobile gaming market...

The SNES had the gameboy player, which for the first time allowed you to play all current nintendo games for 1 system. Also, the super fx chip was a groundbreaking. I would agree to an extent that games sell the consoles, but good games need good innovation. Case in point wii sports. If wii sports wasn't innovative, it would have been no better than tank tank tank. The failure of anyone being able to create a special experience with the gamepad is a major problem.

I think Nintendo Land used the gamepad as its supposed to, but it kinda tanked in the market. And the best selling snes games did not use that super FX chip. Super Mario World, DKC (the 3D models were innovative though), Super Mario Kart and Link to the Past did not use the Super FX chip. Though most used Mode 7 (right?) U mention good innovations yet I don't think these innovations sold systems. That was the quality of games.

Playing 10 hours or so on the Wii U was enough for me to convince me that it can provide really excellent and unique gaming experiences.

Well, of course. The more time you spend with something, the more you can truly tell if you enjoy it or not. Playing the Wii U in a demo station for a brief period isn't an accurate way to gauge your feelings towards it because
1. It's vastly different from the PS3, 360, and even Wii in terms of play styles.
2. You aren't in the comfort of your home to be able to fully devote your time to it.
3. It's a demo. Those are usually unfinished and even the more fleshed out ones don't offer the same experience as the complete game.
4. You spend most of that time "getting used to" the GamePad. When you've played it for more than an hour, you have the feel of the GamePad down and can actually see how it's integrated into the game.

It's like watching a movie. If you only watch it once, you might think it's good or bad. You have to watch it a few more times and actually WATCH the movie to be able to determine whether or not you like or hate it. After watching the movie a few times, you'll even be able to point out exactly what you don't like in the movie and even be able to see all of the director's/animator's/actor's flaws.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

What's so special about a porshe? My Nissan Pulsar plus gets me where I need to go. Owning a porsche just means that you have to pay more for insurance, pay more for repairs/servicing and it attracts the attention of undesirables (thieves, vandals, leeches etc.) Functionally they are both the same just with a different skin. So rather your analogy would be more along the lines of comparing a basic Wii U model and a Delux Wii U model (the only difference being features).

Now if you compared a car to a bicycle then that would be a better analogy (The car of course being my lovely pulsar and the Wii U, and the bicycle being some rusted old thing and the PS4/Xbox1)

I'm not sure what those who complain expect out of the gamepad. To me, being able to continue playing with the tv off is great. Nintendoland is underrated IMO I still have family and friends who want to play Animal Crossing Sweet Leaf despite my efforts to get them to play other games. I challenge any hardcore gamer to breeze through Donkey Kong crash course, the Zelda game, or the metroid game. Game and Wario has Shutter and Gamer, both utilize the gamepad in a unique way.

I'm intrigued by the Wii U and think the GamePad is awesome (anyone that thinks it's too big, bulky, or uncomfortable simply needs to hold one). But as much potential as it has, that's all it has for me right now: potential. Currently, there's only ~5-6 games I'd buy for the system; everything else that's available (including downloadable "indie" games on the eShop sans Earthbound), that's what I have my PS3 for. I do believe this drought will go away in time but $300 is a bit much for me to spend on something that has scant few games with few forthcoming on the horizon.
