Is a lot like worrying. Neither really get anything done. Neither really add much to your life. Both require brainpower. Both are kind of a waste of time. Both can bring about anxiety.

Probably the only difference is that worrying can drain your energy, while anticipation can get you excited or get creative juices flowing. Or maybe worrying can actually help you catch potential problems in whatever you're doing, but that doesn't apply to anticipating a game because that is usually outside of your control. Other than that, they aren't adding much to your well-being. But if I could choose one, it'd be anticipation, because it's a more positive time-waster than worrying.

Like, for me, when I anticipate on Smash or Mario Party or Kart, I state what I want and don't want in those game a lot. Or what the game makers should or shouldn't do. I don't know if that counts as worrying or anticipating, but it is something, maybe.

Thoughts?

I stopped getting hyped/excited about future releases when I turned into a bitter, jaded and cynical adult.
I tend to assume every new game will be awful and I'm usually right. When I'm wrong, I'm pleasantly surprised and not disappointed.

I can't help it when I get excited for new releases. One of the best parts for me is the hype leading up to the eventual release of the game. It probably helps that I'm an overall positive person and find something to like about almost every game I play.

Do delays, buggy releases and sometimes, outright awful games not just leave you utterly disheartened?

I honestly don't play bad games very often. I haven't really been let down by a game that I was largely anticipating either. Delays are disappointing, bugs are annoying but not too common, and I try to avoid downright terrible games.

Hmmm so I guess anticipation/getting excited for new releases isn't as much of a waste of time as it is just being a part of the gaming world. I personally try not to get too hyped, because too much anticipation is too much. I could be doing better things with my time. Plus, I've noticed that the elements of surprise is greater when I don't check up as much on gaming news. Not all the time. But at times.

But, as of the past few weeks I have been anticipating/debating/getting excited...so maybe soon I'll go through a phase of being into other things...then go through a phase of anticipation again

There's nothing wrong with getting excited for games and talking about that with other people. It's just human, like anticipation for just about anything else in the world (media, politics, etc).

And writing what I want in video games gives me something to write articles about on a slow news day.

I still get excited, even though I entered into the next phase of my life some time ago. But this time around it's a tad different - I'll still get caught up in hype and get super excited for a game/console, but as it gets closer I'll realize I'm not actually that stoked about it, and the release day will come and pass without me even noticing.

The only games/consoles this didn't happen for in the past decade or so were the 360, the Wii U, Gears of War 2, and WoW: Burning Crusade. Yea ... strange list haha
