Hey guys, it's been a dang long time since I've made a post here (thanks college). My apologies if my thread creating juices are a bit dried up, but since finals are finally over, why not make a post on the forum!?!?
Let's imagine you are over Nintendo's marketing division in the American / European areas. If you were asked for your input on what Nintendo should do to help increase sales of Wii U (including changes to the product, distribution, the cost of the product, and ways in which to promote it), what advice would you give to Nintendo and how would your idea be beneficial to Nintendo?
For an added bonus (optional of course lol), how much do you think it would cost Nintendo from a financial standpoint to implement your idea/marketing campaign?
I heard they got something of a new marketing team lately, and it shows because they are doing exactly what I would want:
-Market Mario Kart and Smash Bros like they are the 2 most important games in the entire world and market them for as long as is remotely reasonable
-Use Nintendo Directs for localization and downloadable announcements while adding more interesting goofyness to appeal to fans
-Pander to your fans
-Treat a game other than Zelda, Pokemon, Mario like it matters (so far so good with X and Bayonetta 2)
-Save every Wii U announcement possible for E3
-Focus more on notable indies
-Take advantage of the popularity of internet celebrities, especially the ones who would play your game and market it for free
-Don't be boring at E3
My main suggestion, do more of that. Also, market Wii U before Dreamworks and Pixar movies.
My main issue with Nintendo isn't marketing since someone finally told them how awful it was apparently, it's that they can take FOREVER to do things when they really can't afford that right now.
Disassemble every Wii U we currently have in stock and sort the parts by material. Melt the materials down into giant blocks and sell them. Boom, every single Wii U has sold.
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
expend millions in tv ads in the 80s videogame ads style, live TV broadcasts of Nintendo Directs, MOAR EXPLOSIONS and NO FOCUS ON KIDS!!!!!
hell yeah!!!!!!
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

Market Nintendo games on TV in the UK. Or just do any kind of marketing for them over here, since Nintendo UK's been basically doing nothing for the company for the last ten years. And no, internet marketing alone doesn't help, especially not on websites already used by your most die hard fans (aka the people who already have a Wii U or 3DS).
Build a real life Nintendo Land on the East and West Coast.
A Nintendo theme park would be awesome. Although I wouldn't want it to have the aesthetics found in the Nintendo Land game, something more like Disney Land/World would work better.
If I was head of Nintendo's marketing division I would divert at least 75% of the marketing budget on the side to making games until I was at the point where I thought I actually had a good enough range of games to actually be worth marketing.
If the USA Marketing budget really is 80,000,000$ - 60,000,000$ spent on work for hire games from studio's like Treasure / Wayforward would be a far better use of the money than trying to use it to manipulate people into buying what they don't want. I would be more concerned about making it so there was something worth wanting.
“30fps Is Not a Good Artistic Decision, It's a Failure”
Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
I would create a serious of commercials where kids are in a circle playing and they suddenly grow mustaches that look Mario's. That's it. Just that over and over again for every game, even if Mario isn't in it. And hell, why not have any on-looking pets grow mustaches, too. Dogs, cats, fish, parrots, whatever. Mustaches everywhere.
A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by every pebble on the road.
Nah, but seriously, I'd do what I could to get the Wii U's marketing as close to and as impressive as the Wii's "Wii Would Like To Play" campaign and the 3DS's marketing with the four dudes on the couch playing the games that are upcoming and popular on the system.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
Put Mario Kart 8 posters on every bus in America, give out more socks at all major malls that are demoing Wii Fit U, then give out Smash Bros. badges at GameStop for buying something over $15.

Welcome back!! If I was head of marketing in Nintendo I would try my best to market the Wii U. Market the Wii U to the extreme. Put advertisements everywhere and I mean everywhere including Public bathrooms. I would try my best to market the Wii U.

I would
-Make a Mario 3D world and Mario Kart 8 bundle
-Cut the price
-Put posters everywhere for wii u games
-Do an interesting memorable ad campaign
-Don't just put said ad campaign on cartoon network
-All stuff said before in this
-Add miiquality
-Go full-on Genesis vs Super Nintendo mode
-Add something like the expansion pak, only it makes the console stronger than the PS4
-Buy Sega
-Buy Valve
-Have a good FPS or 3 (inventive, fun ones)
-Strict quality control to remove shovelware
-3rd party exclusives
-Have a Nintendo MMO, where you get characters from NFC
???
PROFIT!
