Hey everybody!

I've got a question for you digital buyers of XCX. Can you/I also pre-download the data packs for XCX when buying the game digitally or will i have to download all 20ish gigs at once? That's all, cheers!

EDIT: It doesnt improve anything for the digital version of the game, leaving this up there so people unaware like myself can see. Solved.

Datapacks are including in the digital version. No need of extra download.

Yes, the data packs aren't extra HQ data. With digital versions the game data is already on internal or external storage, and the point of the data packs is to have the data that's on the disc moved to that storage for speedier loading/less disc-access.
The problem, as with many open world games, is not just the sheer volume of data that is being exchanged in the RAM, but also that that data is mostly in a large number of bits and pieces on different areas of the disc.

Plus the fact that discs are outdated and generally way more slower (and less reliable) than flash drives or even hard drives, which are outdated too.

For comparison: The loading from a WiiU disc has speed of 22.5 MB/s. A typical hard drive with USB 2.0 gives 30 MB/s. I didn't measure these numbers for the WiiU but it seems there is not so much a difference in speed than the fact that the laser can't read different locations on the disc at the same time.

@Chandlero: Well there's that (the different locations on the disc) + USB 3.0 and SSDs.
But even with USB 2.0, the difference you mentioned yourself is already huge (33,33%). It's the reason why Xenoblade got those data packs for the retail version.

Flash drives are just superior in general. Not only can't they get scratched like optical discs or damaged by movement and magnets like hard drives, they are also better suited for longtime storage. Optical discs become unreadable after only one decade already.
