Well its clearly set in a future world to chronicles so maybe its the 10th instalment.... X.....
It's not set in the future of the last game. They take place in completely different universes.
The "world" that the people lived on in the first game was in fact two giant titans (I'm not sure of their exact names), with no connection to the "real world".
This time around, the game takes place in the future of our own world, as is evidenced by the U.S. ship that is seen escaping the Earth's destruction during the E3 trailer. This is the ship that crashes onto the alien world that is the game's setting, and why the city is called Neo Los Angeles.
The "different universe" aspect actually doesn't indicate quite that much.
The ending of Xenoblade Chronicles makes clear that Shulk, who bested the two 'gods' of his universe, has obtained the right to reshape the universe entirely after his ideals.
Now, considering Shulk never knew any kind of universe except the Endless Ocean, this would be a daunting task for one person. And this is where my theory kicks in:
According to Alvis, the entire two gods thing originally was just an extensive experiment involving wavelength manipulation on a grand scale (similar to how the Monado's vision powers work, just WAY bigger). This experiment was created by human scientists, and it's possible that it was an attempt to end or even escape the imminent war threatening the earth's population. It went kinda wrong, though, and Klaus and Meyneth kept a cruel circle of destruction and recreation in order to prevent civilizations from advancing, though Meyneth quickly abandoned that idea. That's what led up to the Xenoblade plot in general, if you're familiar with the story.
So, in order to go for the best situation possible, Shulk most likely left it to Alvis to recreate the universe in its state prior to this experiment, and with all traces of that experiment (possibly including Alvis himself) gone so history doesn't just repeat itself. The only exception would most likely be "Bionis", since Shulk wouldn't want to lose his home, so just one planet gets added (or altered) to resemble the environment of Bionis' inhabitable sections, with all of Bionis' creatures continuing to live, and possibly even the Machina.
But that would turn back the universe around it, meaning that mankind never went for the universe-reshaping experiment, so they still have to deal with their invader crisis, now that everything's turned back.
And that's where Xenoblade X kicks in: mankind just lost the earth in an all-out war, and on their search for an inhabitable planet, they stumble upon planet "Bionis" (though they don't know that yet). This would explain the "we can't exist together" stuff mentioned in the third trailer, as well.
Mind you, that this is just a possibility. Nothing's confirmed yet, so anything could happen.
Seriously guys, X would be a poopoodoodoocacapoopledoopley name. Xenoblade Chronicles X sounds just fine to me. If it's called New Xenoblade Chronicles U then I'll have a problem.
I've actually been involved with this part of the process of game making before. By a bizarre turn of events, I was part of a focus group for Dragon Age 3 (not something I tend to do).
They actually had a list of about 20 variations of the title that they test with people to see their reactions. Haha although they then went and ignored the most popular one anyway! Thought that was funny.
It DOES revolve around blade. But not blade as in a sword, but BLADE as in an acronym.
BLADE seems to be the name of some organization or something. And then there's the BLADE tower (the one with the percentage on it)
So yes, BLADE certainly does have a big focus in this game. Att least from what it seems like now.
I believe it's the 6th if you count every xenogame, which is a whole other story. Gears, saga1, saga2, saga3, blade, blade x
As for everyone talking about there being no "xenoblade" i think that part is fine as xeno is the series and it focuses heavily on a blade, the Monado. (atleast i think, i only got a couple hours in but the monado blade featured prominently)

Also, man that acronym sounds forced, lol. Acronyms work when they feel like the phrase organically happened to spell something out, not when you go, alright what can i make out of the word CHEESE- Conquering Hierarchy Existence Evidently Seeming Erroneous (boy, that went bad)
Should've just been Xenoblade X. The first game could have even been Xenoblade (which it was in Japan). There's no need to append words like "Chronicles" to every title.
