Topic: What If Super Smash Bros took the Killer Instinct Approach?

Posts 1 to 19 of 19

If you're unfamiliar with Killer Instinct .. Killer Instinct has seasons where they release 8 new characters for every season.. What if Super Smash Bros did the same thing? start off with a 16 character roster which grows bigger with time? Would you have liked it or not?

No because it would have taken years to get to the character roster we have at this point. That, and Smash isn't really meant to be a fighter where you learn intricate combos with characters. Lacking in characters would just get people disinterested in the game very quickly. It's part of why I can't play Smash N64 for very long; there just isn't much to do with a roster so small in a game of that nature.

Thought you meant if the characters started doing ultras and stuff....that would be right up my alley but the thing is that with KI each character gets a stage, colors, 4 changeable costumes (you can mix them around) and classic outfits, now characters would get colors but stages might not be with all characters if we get any at all but I could be wrong, so far we know we are getting Mewtwo but other then that, that's all we know, I think it would be awesome if he got Poke floats or another old Pokemon stage but as said we don't know yet, he wouldn't get any costumes, I think it can be done but it should be a bit cheaper since KI character packs got more work and content in them, I don't know what will happen with the old Mewtwo trophy unless it would only be gotten by beating a mode with him and then make another for All Star, another thing is that if they do a season pass is that you should get more colors and maybe a special stage.

I would actually love it. SSB like a tradtional fighting game heck yeah. I could just imagine Mega Man pulling off an Ultra Combo. Although I am sure it would get alot of the fanboys mad.

@Tasuki Marvel Vs. Capcom, done

@Topic I would hate it. I prefer complete games at launch rather than anything episodic. If there is still brainjuice left in these devs after launch, its nothing a healthy expansion DLC / patch cant fix.
Just look at Hyrule Warriors for that matter:
Game launches - Devs: "Hmm, we should have made the bad guys playable too" poof major free patch.

Sure, properly made episodic stuff could be out faster and grow over time, but i still prefer a full game, and while i enjoy it, have the dev team work on the next big thing instead of permanently splitting teams up to work on these games simultaniously.
Look what the Team Sega staff has gone through by being forced to work on the same thing over a long time

I wouldn't mind seasons of DLC with new characters, I just think they don't want to keep Sakurai tied up with Smash much longer, let him work on the new Wii U Duck Hunt game!

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I wouldn't want them to take that approach at all. Killer Instinct is basically free to play, as far as I care. I've played it for a bit, but not throwing in all the characters at once seems kind of like a hack job. You're already paying $40 or so for season one characters(in KI) then an additional $40 for season 2 characters. The game is already up to $80, and it doesn't even have nearly as much content as Smash Bros.

If a season 3 comes out, the game will be $120. That's just as much of a hack job as what Capcom has done with Street Fighter. The approach Smash Bros. or even Tekken is taking is far more respecable. Even Injustice and MK9 have done a better job with handling character rosters than Microsoft has with KI.

Considering how much of Wii U's future success probably depends on Smash Bros...no.

Killer Instucnt worked solet because it'd a traditional fighter and hadn't had s entry in the series since the N64 days. Smash Brod for the type if game it I'd simply couldn't live off if that model, while traditional fighting gamed that are really competitive like KI can take the league of legends approach. I love the game but I just bought season 1 and 2 and since I had my Xbox the only character I actually owned was saberwulf and I mostly just use him.

@shingi_70
The whole $40 per season is still BS. Other fighting games have most of the roster. Killer Instict should be able to do the same, unless, they thought that it would possibly not sell. People got sick of Street Fighter IV coming out over and over again. They alienate people by doing that that s***.

@scar392

Its $20 per season, you only pay fortybif you want the old killer Instinct games bundled in. Also the game is made that way, and if you like one character like I did you can just buy them. Its the same model used for league of legends and works well.

Lol no way, they only done that with KI because development of the game was heavily rushed. This is why it also has bare bones features and modes. That said the original dev's done well to get it to the level they did before they handed it over. If Microsoft had ponied up abit more cash and time it could have been a true classic instead of just a decent fighting game.

Nah, better not. Aside of arguments mentioned here, I'd mostly be worried about balancing. If Smash characters were created in a timespan that accommodates for seasonal releases, some characters would get moves that are simply overpowered in certain ways. And while balancing demand isn't quite as strict, at some point, some existing characters would require buffs or nerfs with that kind of approach.
But if there's one thing I hate, it's when you have to relearn your fighters' moveset to even out nerfs and buffs that could destroy your entire metagame otherwise.

But isn't a truebclassic based on the gameplay mechiancs. Also pretty sure it was fee to play from the start, since it wasn't the only game using the delivery method from Microsoft.

The game seems to be doing well and received pretty well by the fgc, but it helped Microsoft bought their way in.

Oh. I thought it was $40 for whatever. It still looks like a hack job without all the characters. If anyone cared about Maya or TJ Combo to the point where they refuse to play the game without them, they wouldn't have even bought anything Killer Instinct until just recently, anyway. Microsoft both loses and gains some money from not having all the characters. They lose money from the people who want a complete roster, then they try to gain it back by charging more than they probably should for each character. I'm one of those people that won't buy s*** until it's actually complete, or very close. That's why when Injustice came out for Wii U, I was excited a few more characters were going to be added on, but it wasn't half of the damn roster. That's besides that we didn't even end up getting that Martian guy and that lady or whoever else it was. It makes the whole the whole thing a scam with the way they run s*** sometimes. I wouldn't have even bought the game if I knew WB was gonna skimp that s***, then they dropped the price and it just adds salt to a wound that they caused. If they aren't gonna follow through, they can go f*** themselves, because I aint buying s*** anymore without knowing for fact that the whole package is there, and another separate package that is worth my while will show up, because it is actually worth it. Just imagine if Microsoft said KI season 2 was cancelled. That's basically what 3rd parties have been doing to Wii U all along, so I don't feel out of place being skeptical about this type of pay and play. Activision pulled the same thing with CoD. They said the DLC would show up, and it never did. That is why anyone who follows Nintendo isn't really giving a s***. It's all connected like that. The way Microsoft has treated KI is similar to how 3rd parties treat their games, and 3rd parties didn't really give a damn about some things, like value, or even the consumers.

I know Microsoft will eventually add all KI content, but they got the idea from an otherwise crappy method of distribution. You really want to buy Streat Fighter IV multiple times? Tekken and Smash Bros. are the only games where things haven't been skimped in one way or another, out of multiple fighting games. Some people might be hurt about Mewtwo coming late, or clones being excluded, but at least we got alot more at one time, and sometimes that makes all the difference, which is why WB still did a good job on Injustice, DLC aside.

Chopping up games like this is done because they don't have the confidence people are willing to play £50 for it. You're buying a skeleton of a game and deciding what muscles you want as well, with no extra hidden entrails and brains to surprise you.

I would imagine at least half of all Wii U owners will buy Smash. And it gives you lots of content for your cash.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
